Old Quadro FX 580. Has a DVI-I output, as well as DisplayPort outputs, none of them work.

I am confused with the whole DVI-I vs DVI-D thing, I am tryimng to connect it to an old Dell monitor, but the displayPort ports dont even work with my new monitor.

According to this site, the FX 580 has 2 displayport outputs, as well as one DVI-I output. What kind of cable do I need as well as what kind of monitor port does DVI-I fit in? Is it a specific DVI-I port or is it this?

I have a (Im assuming DVI-D) cable from my vg248qe cable that I'm using, but I also have like some DVI cable which appears to be DVI-D Single Link?that has a gap in between the pins. On google the Dual link I and D look identical..

What do I use? Am I doing something wrong? The system is so old its on an intel 740 or something,.

Do I need an actual DVI-I Cable?

DVI-I is just so you can use a VGA converter, just means it can carry the analogue signal. If you are plugging into a montior with DVI connection, then DVI-D is what you want. Dual link is for higher resolutions and refresh rates.

Okay. I think I tried using DVI-D to another DVI monitor, but it didn't work for some reason. I will try again. PC Turns on, GPU Blower turns on as well.

Would getting a DVI to VGA cable or adapter work? or like DVI-HDMI?

From your link, look at the left side where the "blade" is. DVI-I has four pins, two on top and two more on the bottom, which carry the analog signal. DVI-D doesn't have those pins. If that's a DVI-I on your card, it should work with any DVI port on the monitor. If it doesn't work I agree with the above that the card should be checked as the FX580 is an older card. It was also a power hungry card so make sure the PSU is up to powering it and you aren't using adapters.

The FX 580 blowers spins there is no external power connector on the card right? My school was throwing out these old workstations they used for their failed engineering program, they all function.

The 580 is a 40W card according to NVIDIA's site

I was thinking you meant the GTX580. You are talking about an old Quadro 580. I'd start with a bios update. I'd also test the card in another PC.

How can I update the BIOS? The only vid output is on the card, 1st gen i5 doesnt have video onboard 🙁



Im just assuming (these PCs were taken apart and put back together by a hardware class that didnt know what they were doing) but this PC Seems to work perfectly fine with everything else.

Borrow a card? To be honest you don't know the history on these PCs and there could be all kinds of issues. I would actually take it to a shop and have them figure out whats wrong. Because ANYTHING could be broken. And unless you have the spare parts to swap in we can only guess what the issue is.

I got it for free, I don't really feel like putting any money into it cause I was just gonna put ubuntu on on it and run a sever or something

A server would have no need to an add-on video card unless you don't have onboard video.

Do you need to change the monitor input manually? Can you try a different cable? Do you know the PC even works? I already said you don't know the history on these PCs. There is a good chance the school dumped them because they don't work.

Edit: Old power macs I think used mac edition cards. It might not be working because it won't work with a PC. They were very different camps back then.

Going from memory, those used a MAC bios, and they aren't compatible with Windows PCs. I never personally tried and I don't follow Macs so I'm not sure how possible it is to move them around. I know people back then needed to buy Mac cards.

You've tried 3 different cards. I'd try a different cable and monitor. Just to rule those out. Board or PSU also possible.
