I want an RPG PC game, but an old school RPG.
What i call an RPG isnt what the industry now calls an RPG. and i dont know what to call the games that used to be called RPGS. we need a new genre because rpg now often means action/adventure or shooter!
I liked escape from eshcalon, but i really want something like ultima IV (my all time favourite game) or what chaos chronicle seems to be promising... group turn based strategic combat with movement allowance like panzer corps. which was an excellent game btw!
actually if i cannot find a rpg maybe Ill play a stategy game.
anyone know any RPGs ot srategy I may like?
and not diablo or witcher! (so linear and way too much video)

There are very few turn based games these days, however the spirit of RPG's of old live on with Dragon Age Origins and even Dragon Age 2 (though not as good). While the combat plays in real time, they let you pause as often as you want, so you can control the action as if it was turn based.

The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim is pretty good and is played as a single person, rather than a party. It is real time, with no pause mechanic, but it is still quite good. You may also like Oblivion or Morrowind (which are older).

Mass Effect is also a party based series, but is futuristic. I haven't played it, but it is supposed to be great.

Since you mentioned strategy games, another series you might find interesting, that blends the two, is King's Bounty. The battles are turn based, and you have more of an RPG feel outside battles.

Thanks for response!
i tried mass effect demo but didnt like it, it seemed much more like a shooter with some story nailed on, duck, stand and shoot, duck etc etc 😛
I did enjoy skyrm not cause its what i wanted but mainly because it was so well designed. Even tho the main quest was too easy the side quests provided much entertainment. i especially liked the thief's guild quests tho i never completed it because once i got the key that opens everything i didnt want to return it.
i played dragon age 1 but didnt finish it. I found it frustrating because the characters rarely followed what you told them to do or where to stand in combat! i played morrowind and oblivion, though haven't tried any kings bounty yet
looking forward to wastelander and chaos chronicles and maybe the new shadowrun.
just got demo of dark souls will try that.

Btw, there is an "advanced tactics" addon for Dragon Age Origins, and gives you a lot more control over tactics for your characters. Though I never found that they did not listen to commands with or without it. If you have a ranged character, just make their behavior ranged, otherwise I leave them at default, and when casting spells, I used the Hold command, which makes them not move, but turn it off between spells, so that they move with the mobs. You may also need to look into your character sheet to look for a button that tells rogues to position themselves behind targets to backstab. That made melee rogues much more awesome.

You may also want to create a wizard and give them several tactics for healing, and regenerating your characters. The order of the tactics also matters.

i played some of them escape from eschalon i think it was very good too. but now I've discovered ToEE (temple of elemental evil) it seems very complex and i keep dying but apart from the screen being very dark i think its great (if i could work out how to win my first battle 😛

played all them very good too!
tho havent tried the XCOM remake yet.

I played it for about a week before my pc went tits up.

it was good, just like original but I can see it getting a bit repetitive if you play it for a while

I need to go back and beat ToEE. Did you apply the unofficial patch? I suggest it.

You could download an emulator like SNES9x and get a rom for classics like Final Fantasy VI, best game I have ever played that is a classic RPG. More recently you could check out Ys: The Oath in Felghana or Ys: Origin, they are more fast paced action though. Also GOG.com gives 9 classic games for free when you sign up for a free account. They include Ultima IV and several other RPG's.

no i already patched to #3 but then i read unoffical patch requires only to #2 and also that the saved games arent compatible. not sure atm whether i want to restart game or not, if the patch includes more flag and a brightness slider id be in :) (i always run out of flags to put on town map and also have to increase brightness on monitor then put back to normal for other games

well i just got to noble (2nd ttown in ToEE) and realised I have played it before but not sure if i completed, i just remeber the boring walking all up the wooden piers distinctly 😛
as far as old RPGs
well while ultima IV is my favourite rpg (and first one too-maybe that's why it my atf) but when I tried playing it again recently I found I have gotten too used to much better UIs to enjoy it.
So i dont think I can go back too far. tho ill certainly be looking forward to wasterlander 2 and shadowrun returns, probably even Numenera tho its onlt control 1 person not a party. and even the remake of baldurs gate 1. thave been thinking playing ultima VII again maybe with some mods tho i do prefer turn based group combat!

For older games I would highly recommend:

System Shock 1 & 2
Fallout 1&2(newer ones are fun too.)
Deus Ex(RPG/FPS)
Baldar's Gate 1 & 2( buy from GOG.comthen upgrade with free mods, cheaper than buying Baldor's from Steam.
Ultima 6-8
Torchlight(I have only played the demo)
The Witcher 1&2
Darklands
Return to Krondor
Some old RPGs on GoG for free.

Happy Role playing, the Prisoner
