My systemconfig:
FX 6300
Gigabyte Ga-78lmt-usb3 rev 6.0
corsair vs 450 psu
230 gb 7200rpm 8mb cache hard drive

i found a 80 gb ide hard drive lying unused in my shelves when i checked it had 7200 rpm and only 2 mb cache

my idea is use old drive as boot drive and utilise the full 230 gb for storage

The main issue is that it is an IDE drive. You'd need an IDE adapter. Which may or may not be bootable.

Consider this:
A new 1TB drive is ~$50
That 80GB drive is 8% of that. Not even a sneeze worth.
Add to that, it is old. Likely to die sooner rather than later.
Add to that, yes, you can tell the difference between an old 80GB IDE drive and a newer SATA drive.
