So it's time to finally upgrade my old Gaming rig. For years I've been using a laptop but now that I'm finally settled no longer traveling I need to upgrade my old system. I'm really thinking about getting the GTX 3070, but I'm thinking I'm going to have to do some upgrades first. Is there anything salvageable currently? What's not on the list is an SSD and a few 2 terabyte hard drives. I'm trying to keep it on the DL as much as possible from the spousal unit, we all know how that goes. LOL

This is what I have been thinking if I need to just gut it:

Your older parts list is private - but given the era (660TI), probably not too much salvageable.

The new list is... fine, but completely mis-matched.

I'm assuming you're gaming?
If so:
  • The 3600 non-X might be cheaper, and 5000 series CPUs are just around the corner so you might want to hold off a little bit.
  • 4x 16GB... Why? 2x8GB would be plenty, and 3600Mhz would be a good choice.
  • A 1050W Platinum PSU? Complete overkill...
You're over spending/spec'ing (at least based on info available) by ~$300.

So my old fx8350 is pretty much garbage for gaming at this point? I might just end up turning that old pc into a media server for the house if thats the case.

I definitely wouldn't call it garbage--any working system isn't garbage. It's good for a media server and general stuff, but it's not going to be good for a 3070--you definitely need something more modern for that. And it will probably be more bang for the buck too. :)

What PSU do you already have? The PSUs in the old vs new lists are different?

Pretty much - Especially in the same breath as a 3070 etc.

There are lower powered systems you could use as a media server, but that would be one use for the old FX system
