When I was a kid there was this game that game pre-installed on my PC where you start off with a silver/red space ship after you press start and this huge gate thing closes and opens.
You could add a second player but they'd play with a silver/blue ship with a different kind of special ammo.
One kind of special ammo was this bomb with a huge circular area of effect, and the other one was, I think, like scattered grenades. There are asteroids of different sizes along the first level that you can shoot and destroy, plus some guns and other ships.
It was vertical-scrolling, not horizontal. First level had a dark or black background.

There were 3 kinds of normal ammo, I think, each with a different colour. One was red, one was blue, and I can't remember the colour of the third. To upgrade your ammo, you had to pick up ammo of the same colour. If you picked a different colour, it went back to level one of that most recent colour.
