My new windows 8 laptop has an additional hard drive port and I put my old Vista hard drive in but I can't get it to recognize the old hard drive. How can I get windows 8 to recognize my old drive?

Winkey plus 'X', choose Disk Management. Your Vista disk should be shown, probably as Disk 1. Rt click on any partitions and 'Delete Volume'. Aim is to have all unallocated space which you can then format and create a New Simple Volume with a Drive letter of your choice.

Thx for the help but it is not showing in disk management. It definitely seated correctly. Would it make sense for the manufactorer to have the port but not have it connected?

No! There must be a BIOS setting preventing you from 'seeing' it. What make/model laptop?
