Older games PC emulators

Hey guys, maybe you can shed some advice on my issue. I really enjoy older games from back in the good days. You know, games like Super Mario, Zelda: Ocarina of Time, etc. I found a few site that provide these games that run on PC. I don't quite understand how to install them correctly. I'll download, install, and i can never get them to run. Is there software I'm lacking, or some sort of mystical secret behind these?

Do you know if your downloading .exe games or ROMs for use with an emulator?
