Older Motherboards and Conroe

i was wondering if you could upgrade to a new conroe chip with a much older motherboard. i myself have a amd :roll: and im pretty clueless when it comes to intels, but two of my friends have older intel setups and are not quite satisfied. one of them has a motherboard that is quite old (agp and ddr, but i dont know the chipset), and the other one is quite recent (less than a year, but still dont know the chipset).

would it be possible for either of them to upgrade to conroe with nothing more than a bios upgrade? if so, would there be any problems with doing so?

Conroe runs lower voltages than those older boards can take.

They'll need new boards for sure.

not necessarily MasterLee..... I have an Aerocool Zerodba 500W supply in my current system, 1GB of DDR400 and a Geforce 6800GT (AGP). When I do my Conroe build (once I have enough money) I will be able to move the Aerocool supply over to my new setup without a problem.

Not necessarily true. There's the ASRock mobo that is good for transitioning from DDR-DDR2 and AGP-PCIe. It's not a "great" performance platform, but it has almost endless configuration options(no SLI or X-Fire). Here's a review of it.

You're right, but for only $85 Canadian...it's a good cheap way for those of us without a lot of money. You can upgrade components as you go, even if it takes up to a year. That's usually how i upgrade...not everything at once. Even though it's not a real enthusiast board, i'm glad to see ASRock releasing these. Coupled with a E6300, you could conceivably have a Core2Duo setup underway for probably ~$300-$330 CAD from a s939 system, or s478...and still outperform them.

My old mb can undervolt a CPU to as low as 1.0 volts......

Does conroe run with less than 1 volt????
