my sons PC has been getting very slow .... Dell E521 but no errors and no network issues.

Decided to do a clean install of all.
So used the Dell OS re-install to put in a clean install of XP-Professional (as its licensed)
Obviously first thing to do is to get network connectivity all OK ... then I can look at newer OS
All OK ... other than it is prompting for network validation.

Also ran the Dell drivers resource cd to install all the drivers.
At this point Ethernet works - to a fashion - but not correctly.

By default it has IE6 ... when I for example type in bbc.co.uk it will go to that site OK (site complains browser is too old)
If I try Amazon.co.uk - fails
Google - fails
Microsoft update site - fails
Microsoft activation site fails
Kaspersky main site fails
Kaspersky HTTPS for download fails

The failure is 'cannot find server or DNS error'

I went to IE
>Tools
>internet options
>connections
> LAN settings : set to Automatically detect settings

then tried

>Tools
>internet options
>connections
>Setup
>connect to internet
>set up connection manually
>connect using Broadband that is always on

Still the same.

Also tried using set up a home network ... it was happy to connect to router but still browsing issues.

What am I missing ?

Solution
Go back into network settings and turn off IPV6, then make sure IPV4 is back to automatically detect settings.
Can you then ping those same sites you mentioned?
Do you get expected IP, Gateway, DNS settings when you ipconfig /all?
Do you have another computer you can use to find updated drivers for your network card? Can also try downloading another browser like Chrome (need offline installer) from another computer and installing that.

Hi.
As far as i know, as Windows has Ended support for Windows xp, you wont be able to see windows update pages and similars, You could try installing Google Chrome with an offline installer.
I understood that you want to instal newer OS, what new OS? as i know you cant go from XP to W7 just downloading an update(example).

Windows XP is so full of security holes.
If you did install while connected to network, then chances are that PC got infected almost instantly.

You install XP without network, apply latest service pack, install antivirus and only then connect to network.

Or better don't use XP, install win7.

BTW - https sites require correct date/time settings. If your pc date/time is set to year 2000 (for example), you won't be able to connect any https web site.

OK ... update
OK .. just spent another several Hrs of fun.

One important thing I found it is IE related ONLYI

Installed FireFox and that works fine .. allowed me to manually get SP3. & Kaspersky

Ran diagnostics it says HTTP, HTTPS & FTP is blocked .. and to change Firewall settings.

I disabled Windows Firewall as Kasperky installed (and working fine with Firefox)

Run diagnostics - same error

I then found an IE diagnostic application entitled IEFIX .... ran all of that and it reports all is fine.

Need to get IE working as I can't get MS updates without it.

"then chances are that PC got infected almost instantly."

I have Kasperky installed and it has carried out a full scan, also ran 'superantispyware' also no issues.

I want to get to point I can try next step of upgrade - and move it to W7
Past of my investigations show W10 may not be an option.

there is no real upgrade from xp to win7

just buy a copy of win7, fresh install it. stop messing around with winxp

I don't even think MS host the windowsxp update servers anymore.
