I have bought an olympus c-5060 dcamera with a 32mb xd picture card and
ordered and received a 512mb olympus branded xd picture card from clove
technology.
When I inserted the 512 card, it asked if I wanted to format the card and I
went through the prompts, while it was formatting I saw a yellow progress
bar and it seemed to only get 3/4 of the way through, it was very quick
maybe only a couple of seconds then I got a "card error message" formatting,
I removed the card and inserted it a couple of times and the same thing
happened.
The 512 xd card seems if it is ok because I can take pictures and can move
them to a PC.
The camera states that the xd card has 409 pictures in HQ 2592x 1944 mode.
I am unsure what to do, the camera is a week old, although the xd picture
card seems to work what about the error message? do I return the 512 mb
card as faulty, is 409 pictures in HQ 2592x 1944 mode seem correct for a
512 mb card?
or is it a fault of the camera?

Any advice would be appreciated.
TIA

Steve

If you can, stick the card in a PC and see what the computer says it has for
space. If you use one of the PC card readers, it should come up as a drive
on the PC, then you can right-click on the drive letter and select
properties. It should reflect a size of about 512KB, if not the card is
defective.

Do you have the latest firmware for your camera? A lot of cameras Ive
had needed firmware updates to handle the larger cards and to fix
bugs.

I did as you suggested, when I do properties on the drive( xd card) thru win
xp it states 523,632,640 bytes, 499 mb. So it must be giving me all the
space, I must say I am relieved that it is OK.
I have downloaded the latest firmware, thanks also for that tip.

John,

My Olympus E-20 will use an expensive microdrive hard disk, but I buy
several small CompactFlash SanDisks, 256 MB and 128 MB cards. If a card goes
bad on a long cruise or land trip, I don't lose many photos. A card has
never failed using the E-20. When on a trip, I burn the photos at night to a
CD using a small portable laptop, and sometimes upload to a digital wallet
while taking photos. The E-20 will take photos up to 15 MB, but I don't take
many such large photos while traveling.

I also have an Olympus 3030 that did have a card that became inoperable, but
it was a 16 MB SmartMedia card that came with the camera. Since then I have
switched to buying ComactFlash cards for both cameras. SmartMedia cards may
be OK, but I've had bad luck with them. Maybe it was my own doing. Olympus
usually packages a small Smart Media card with their cameras.

The best plan is to buy several small cards based on the size of the photos
you will be taking, and upload to a digital wallet or small laptop as soon
as a card is filled.
