I'm not sure what distribution you are using, but any camera I've plugged into Mint and Ubuntu has not required installing anything. Just plug it in and it mounts the camera as storage.
If a direct "wire" fails ... as it does with my Kodak, then get a USB chip-reader(?) for $8 at Wallmart and install the proggie GTKAM. Yes removing the mem-chip is a PITA. But once done in Ubuntu, it's automagic plugN'play for me.
