Will any notebook replace cd drive work with the Omnibook 510 OR does it
have to be a specific HP model?
TIA

If my memory is correct the 510 has a separate
expansion unit for the CD drive and I presume
that yours has a fault. I have repaired a few of
these where the CD or DVD is not detected
by the OS and it has turned out to be a fault in
the base unit itself. Even though the FDD was
detected in the same slot.
Have you thought of a USB drive as a alternative
cheaper option.

The unit has been bought on eBay and I have not received it yet, it was
stated that there was no cd drive or floppy drive. I have considered a usb
drive BUT from a travel perspective (especially on airplanes) an internal
drive would be preferable.

If you have not bought the expansion unit with it
then USB is your only option.
The 510 has no internal CD or FDD
The expansion unit is not really a portable device.
Have a look

Well I am not sure if the expansion unit will be with the notebook, so I
will only really know when it arrives, the USP shipping weight is nearly 7
lbs, cannot find a weight for the notebook with and without the docking bay.
From Cnet they give the weight as a little over 3lbs, so it may be that the
docking bay is with it.
