On a very tight budget

Hey I own an a Hp computer core I 5 2500s tried upgrading it with a gtx 970 and power supply but it would turn on and stay on a black screen ....,later upgraded it with a lower end amd hd 7770 and it worked the power supply was a 550 watt corsair powers supply. I have now saved up and want to buy a gtx 1060 , should I upgrade the mother board too ??? I don't have money for newer i5 skylake

Download cpu-z , let us know motherboard model.

A lot of the older HP prebuilds will not work with nvidia cards past the 6** series

They are more forgiving with amd cards which does give you an option though.
