older motherboards had an "onboard" graphics processing chip. you didn't need a dedicated graphics card or a CPU with built-in graphics processor.
for quite some time now Intel has included a graphics processor in their CPUs and AMD has also started to produce APUs, a CPU/GPU combo processor.

these are all labeled "onboard" now.

"dedicated" graphics is when you have a separate graphics processing unit(GPU). a card designed to handle all graphics/image processing.
these are usually much much better for gaming, video processing, and super high resolutions.
