On Board Sound Really Quiet

Hi. So I was building a cheap PC for brother with used parts, initially the sound worked fine(Windows 10), however he prefers Windows 7(God knows why) so I installed that OS instead. However now the sound is very quiet. I've tried everything I can think of to fix it. Audio drivers from motherboard site, played with sound settings, bios settings. I've even gone back to Windows 10 and it's still very very quiet. Can barely make out whats being played. Any suggestions?? Maybe realtek site would be better for drivers? I have no idea.

Motherboard - Asus M5A78LM LX V2
OS - Windows 10 64 bit

Where's the sound coming from? Headphones/Speakers?

What speakers/headphones are you using? If using headphones, try using a different headset and test again.

Also make sure that your gear is connected to the back of the PC, avoid using front panel connectors until we determine the cause.

Plugged in via motherboard not front panel, and I've tried both headphones and speakers. No luck with either (Were both working before this)

Sound can only be heard through the speakers (I assume because they go a lot louder than the headphones). With headphones you hear nothing

Do your speakers have headphone input? If so, this would likely solve the issue, since you could then adjust the volume via volume knob on speakers...
