Hi all, I'm using a Lenovo Y520, and recently it's started doing this thing where when I turn it on, it displays the background image of the lock screen as a missing file that says "Windows sign-in", and when I try to sign in, the screen goes black for an extended amount of time before putting me back on the login screen. No idea what could be causing it and I need this fixed by tomorrow. Any ideas?

Try the advice suggested by MS:

Your Startup process is corrupt . . .

Start your PC, just as Windows attempts to load (spinning dots), press and hold Power Button for 5 - 10 seconds to perform a Hard Shut Down

Do this twice

On the third start Windows will boot into the Recovery Environment and from there you can access System Repair, Safe Mode, Command Prompt . . . etc.

Please try each option one at a time, then see of Windows will boot to the login screen . . .

Go to Troubleshoot - Advanced Option - Startup Repair
See if Windows startup can repair itself

Go to Troubleshoot - Advanced Option - System Restore
Check to see if you have a restore point you can go back to

if that doesn't help, you might need to reinstall windows.
On another PC, download the Windows 10 media creation tool and use it to make a win 10 installer on USB

Anything you want to save?
  • on screen after languages, choose repair this pc, not install.
  • choose troubleshoot
  • choose advanced
  • choose command prompt
  • type notepad and press enter
  • in notepad, select file>open
  • Use file explorer to copy any files you need to save to USB or hdd
