I have a desktop with an i5 4690 with integrated graphics as well as a GTX 970. I also have an old i7 laptop with an Nvidia chipset. On the laptop, it would switch back and forth between the onboard graphics and graphics card to save battery/create less heat. I have tried to google how to do that on my desktop. I can only find help for setting up a multi-monitor setup. I just want to do this on one display. I figure it might eat up less power/generate less heat/extend the life of the graphics card (cuz I can hear the fans spin up when I'm running intensive games). I have an MSI Z97 Gaming 5 motherboard if that helps. I only have 1 display, a BENQ XL2411 connected to the graphics card through DVI. Would connecting to the video card port on the motherboard help? Basically I only want my 970 to run when I'm playing games rather than powering basic Windows and browsing the web.

You cant do what you want.
Mainstream desktop boards are just not designed for that. There are some all-in-one type boards that can do that but those are usually laptop boards and don't take regular desktop GPU's either.
