Okay. I have just bought and installed a new GPU for my brother and after many attempts of trying to fix it, I have come up empty handed every time.

Here is the problem:

I have just bought and installed a EVGA GTX 960 SSC ACX 2.0 for my brother for his computer and since I did that, no 3.5mm jack is working. He is currently using 2 monitors. (Both 1280x1024) 1 really old monitor using VGA (Using the DVI port with the included DVI-VGA adapter) and using a HP Compaq LA1951g via DVI (I bought a DisplayPort to DVI cable for this) and ever since I installed this new card, the onboard audio simply does not work. I can see within the Playback Devices in the audio output menu that there is NVIDIA HDMI Output (Port 0-3) (Guessing the 3 DP and the 1 HDMI) Speakers and Realtek Digitial Output. Even though I can see that the 3.5mm jack on the motherboard is plugged in, it does not come up saying that the Speakers are plugged in. But it does say the Realtek is.

Now, even with the Reaktek Digitial Output saying it is active and when I play music, it even says there is audio coming though it, there is nothing coming through the speakers. It is the same, even when I use a pair of 3.5mm headphones using the front audio jack (Which is plugged in. This I checked) and it still says that the only audio playback available is the Realtek Digital Output.

I have found that when I use my Turtle Beach PX22s though USB, it finds it and will put the audio through them, but it comes up as a separate playback output and is called Speakers, Turtle Beach PX22, Default Device. Audio will play through these, and there is no problem, but once I unplug them, it goes back to the Realtek Digital Output and then no audio can be found anywhere.

His current set-up is:
MoBo: Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3 Ref 4
CPU: AMD FX-4100 @ 4.5GHz
SSD: Kingston HyperX 3K 240GB

The only thing I can think of which is going wrong is it is trying to put the sound through the DP into the DVI monitor. But it doesn't seam to say that in the Playback menu. So I am really stumped. He hasn't stopped complaining that he cannot use his speakers and that he is being forced to use MY headphones to actually hear anything through his newly upgraded PC.

Please help because I have absolutely no idea what the freaking hell is going on and it is pissing me off because I am a qualified technician and I cannot solve a problem like this. So, I hope for a quick response because I want to get this sorted so my brother will shut up and stop complaining and so I can not feel so freaking useless.

Many thanks

- Joe

Nope. Nothing is muted and I cannot select my speakers because it's saying they're not plugged in when they clearly are.

Okay, done that.

It now has Headphones in the Playback menu, and it is now called Digital Audio (S/PDIF) But the same problem, even with both the rear 3.5mm and the front 3.5mm headphone jack having something plugged in, it is still saying there is nothing plugged in.

This is getting stupid now...

I can't because it is saying that they are not plugged in. It's saying that the only audio output plugged in (When the headset isn't plugged in) is the Realtek Digital Output.

Oh, yea... Headset has gone again and it's gone back to Realtek Digital Output

After further investigation... I can now say that even when I connect something via 3.5mm headphones jack (Rear or front) Windows doesn't make the usual sound saying something is attached, and I also cannot find the Realtek software to show if there is anything actually plugged in...

Did you ever get this solved? I'm having the same issue. I installed a new Nvidia GPU and I can see the play back devices and when I say test it shows green sound waves on the playback device as if it's playing sound but can't hear anything. I reinstalled the lates RealTek driver and it shows the same things like it's lugged in and shows soundwaves etc but no audio can be heard, driving me nuts!!!!!

Thanks
Lane

Nope, nothing I tried worked... Absolutely nothing. I've had to resort to giving him my Turtle Beach PX22s but disconnecting the headphones and using a 3.5mm splitter to have audio. (Using a splitter so he can still use headphones if he wishes) So, he's kinda using USB headphones, but swapped the headphones for speakers. It works... But it does sometimes come up with the Realtek Audio Manadger bugging out. View this video here to see it

I have come to the conclusion that it's the overclock which has stopped his onboard audio from working. I think it blew the sound chip or something. Weather if that is right or not is another story. But I've bought a super cheep sound card from Amazon.co.uk which will hopefully be okay and fix the problem. I can't tell you yet as it hasn't arrived.

Also, if you want the link... Here you go.

Had to get a PCI has his GPU is overlapping the PCIe 1x slot.
Sorry I couldn't be any more help.

You did go into the control panel and then Audio devices and select the default playback device as realtek? Then be sure you have the right speaker configuration set. And you can check the advanced volume control to be sure nothing is muted and adjust the volume.

Yea, I'm sure. Did you watch the video I posted? Here you go.
I've checked everything... When I set the Realtek as default and everything like that... There is no sound from any of the audio jacks.

I can't watch video where I'm at my boss has a watchdog program running that limits what we can do here. I won't be home until after 9pm tonight I'll try to remember to check out your video. Have you checked you tube for any videos on configuring your audio ports?

Just a friendly reminder that I think you forgot about checking the video once you got home.

Okay watched the video and it looks like a hard issue has developed. It could be something simple like a sticky key on your keyboard that still is making contact. It could be something more complex like when you seated the new GPU it cause something to move slightly so it keeps making contact causing the program to pop-up. Try another keyboard see if that has any affect. Inspect the area around the audio chip and around the audio I/O. Look for anything making contact, some cases motherboard panels are removable and can slide ever so slightly causing issues. See if the motherboard is firmly in place and the I/O ports are protruding properly out the I/O shield. Did the GPU installation go smoothly?

It wouldn't be his keyboard as I got him a new one for Christmas (Logitech G910 Orion Apark) I checked with my backup PS2 keyboard and same issue.

The installation of the card went as smoothly as I could of wanted. No issues or anything I can think of. Well... Other then the audio. Lol.

I will check his chips and O
IO shield once I get home from work or if I can get an hour break. I'm the head technician for a county hospital and currently training 2 apprentices and a new part time member of staff. So, if I can get someone to cover for a hour... I will nip to my mums and have a look but from what I can remember... It is all fine and it happens regardless of something being plugged into any 3.5mm port. Excluding headphone of the case.
