onboard ehternet port works intermittingly

the Ethernet light goes out frequently. sometimes for quite a while then comes back on for a short while . really frustrating. the driver is up to date good cord. device mgr says working properly even while off. diagnostic says plug in a cable. bios is enabled. what is wrong? I'm using it now but in a while it will turn itself off. help!

Check if the cable is loose. If not, try another cable. If nothing helps, probably it might be on the verge of going bad. You may purchase a separate ethernet card and plug it in PCI slot, if using a desktop system. If using a laptop, you can purchase a USB to ethernet converter adapter and plug it in one of the USB ports of computer.

I've had the same problems on a couple of old boards, and the only thing which has worked, after extensive troubleshooting, has been as thetechy says - new network card, or a USB-to-ethernet adapter.
