So today I decided to install my new RAM. Before doing so I thought, lets clean out the PC. So I took it and used compressed air to blow all the dust out. Then while attempting to remove the CPU fan and clean that I removed the heatsink as well. Since I didn't have any thermal paste to reapply it, I went to the store, got a new heatsink and fan(cause the one I had was crappy anyways) and came home. Unplugged everything, installed new heatsink and fan, plugged everything back in and turned my comp on.

When I turned it on I had no internet. Did ipconfig /all and the onboard nic for my mobo wasn't appearing also checked under network connections and it wasn't there either. I went to device manager and checked under network adapters and it wasnt showing unless I checked show hidden (broadcom). Double checked that I was plugged in, had a cat5 in with green blinking activity light but still nothing showing in either device manager or network connections. I downloaded the updated drivers off of my mobos website, uninstalled on my system through device manager (they NEVER went away somehow) and restarted. After restarting I ran the installer for the drivers I downloaded, was advised that it completed successfully. Still nothing showing under device manager or network adapters, checked ipconfig just in case, nothing there.

I restarted my computer again to no avail. Tried just shutting it down and then removing power cord to ensure it wasn't doing anything weird. Still nothing. Went into my BIOS and saw onboard NIC was enabled, disabled it, saved and restarted. Once comp started back up I went back into bios and re-enabled it. This is where something weird happened, I got a windows failed to boot message and that it needed to run repair, I ran the repair, got no errors and upon restart it worked fine. Unfortunately the onboard NIC was still not working. So I went into the driver setup that i had downloaded and told it to uninstall instead of doing it through device manager window, after trying this back and forth about...10 times it disappeared from my device manager. At this point I restarted, attempted to install drivers again but the device still would not show.

I tried this in safe mode with networking but nothing worked.

So at this point I gave up and went to buy a NIC from the store, a D-link DGE-530T Hardware Version D2. Come home, PC is off, and I plug it into my PCI slot below my video card, turn computer on nothing showing for new devices, check device manager and nothing there. Install drivers and check again, nothing. Check the back of the NIC and there is a green flashing light. Turn comp off go into bios and disable onboard NIC and then restart. Still nothing, retry drivers, nothing. Boot into safe mode with networking and try again, nothing.

So at this point I have NO idea whats happening. First off, no clue why my onboard NIC decided to stop working, I would have though it might have been something to do with windows getting the boot error but it happened BEFORE that. Now I have no idea why my new NIC card refuses to be found.

I am pulling my hair out here, especially since I've gone to the store twice and wasted 5 hours on this.

OS: Windows 7 64bit SP1 (if it matters my windows is trial with trial version up, HDD failed a while back and by that point had lost the cd so I didn't have CDKey haven't had issues before so never addressed it, hope it this isnt the reason cause Id feel stupid)
CPU: i7-2600
RAM: 16gb DDR3 16000
MOBO: ASRock Z68 Extreme4
VID(if it matters?): MSI Nvidia GTX 970
NIC: D-Link DGE-530T hardware D2
Drivers: tried both 11.10 and 11.20

If anyone can help this would be amazing, Ive got homework (and video games) to do and I can't do anything right now.

If I had to guess it would be a driver issue, maybe something higher up than the NIC? If theres something that is involved in that process, I wouldnt think it would be a PCI driver for the new nic because my video card works just fine, but I'm not sure.

TLDR:

Had to take mobo out to install new heatsink/fan after I put it back in comp stopped recognizing the onboard nic. Driver uninstall, reinstall, restart didnt work. New NIC card has same issue of just not appearing under device manager or showing a new device. Currently using internet through mobile phone with USB tether for internet.

Well in case anyone finds this thread because of a similar issue, fixed (kind of) by turning off system, unplugging from power supply and removing CMOS battery. Waiting a few minutes then putting it back in and turning on the comp. May have to check boot settings in BIOS (I didnt) if it doesnt boot to windows. Also I say fixed (king of) because before when my computer couldnt see my onboard nic it still had activity lights in the back on the plug, now that my computer DOES see my onboard nic (as well as my PCI NIC card I bought) it has no activity lights when plugged in. I dont know why, but as long as I have internet I dont care at this point.
