onboard vs pci

I have a 1.3 gig box that has a on board savage s3 with 32 mgs shared
ram. The only slots I have for upgrade are pci. My son was in town
this week end and we were talking about A pci 256 mg board that was at
Comp USA this week. He was saying that pci is so slow I wouldn't see a
difference. I said there had to be an improvement between 32 and 256
even with a pci card.

He suggested that I ask here. So I'm asking. Should I see a difference?

Thanks
Mike

Mike,
PNY has refurbushed FX5200 PCI cards for $30, but try to get them to
ship ground. Yes, the 128 mb PCI FX5200 will make a difference over the
mobo video chip. The FX5200 is a rather pedestrian chip, noticibly
slower than a ATI 9600.

That wouldn't help much especially with FS that is mainly CPU-bound,
but a little bit, nothing can be worse than an onboard Savage (maybe
Sis)...

But you need a balanced machine, a fast card with that 1.3 CPU won't
give you performance for your money.

yes and no, more memory on the graphics card isnt going to be a magic speed
up (ie ATI 800xl 256mb vs a ATI 800xl 512mb they perform same, its just to
con you out of money)

however a Savage s3 is really old and slow, and 32mb of shared ram IS too
small, so 256mb would be better for you, unless its another savage s3, what
PCI gfx card was you looking at?? I didnt know they made any 256mb PCI gfx
cards. I thought the last PCI gfx card was an ATI 8500 64mb or something?

PCI isnt really a graphics card standard, and is slow, however its much
better than onboard i guess...hmmm

This I know:) I'm waiting for the next version of FS to come out before
I buy. Trying to keep from always being behind the game. Since FS9 is
the first one I bought I thought I'd try for a little improvement.
