Hello. I was going to upgrade my motherboard and decided to buy one with an onboard wi-fi but couldn't find out whether wi-fi will work when PC is switched off.

Right now i have wi-fi router which works 24/7 even when my pc is shutdown but will onboard wi-fi like Asus Go! work the same way?

Solution
nope. it will only work when it's on.

not sure why you want one with wifi built on. that's something that might make sense with a mini-itx board, as you don't have room for pci slots, but for any other motherboard you'd get better and stronger wifi with a pci card then you would from any onboard wifi.

You seem to be talking about two completely different parts...the router and the PC.

If the router is on, yes, it will be working. If the PC is off....no, the WiFi on the PC will not be doing anything. But the router, over on the other side of the room, will still be on.

Thx for replying. I thought that by having onboard wi-fi i wouldn't need router at all since it would act both as internet adapter and wi-fi router. I guess then there's really no point in overpaying for something like Asus Maximus Formula VI or Deluxe then.

Ok thank you all.

I usually use headphones so it wont matter and im planning to take 4771 core so it will be awhile before im going to overclock (if ever). The only two reasons i considered Formula are wi-fi and the fact that i had striker II formula for a while now. Its not that good but at least it worked for years with only few issues. I do not upgrade often, except when something brakes.
