I usually get 20-30mbps dowload using wifi and more with ethernet, but when I decided to move the modem to my pc so I could use ethernet (it was at my mums pc before that) It went down to a painfull 1mbps (using ethernet). I kept it there for about a day hoping it was a problem with our provider, but after that I put it back in my mums room and it went back to 20-30. I get that the port in my room is probably slower but I refuse to believe that they even bothered to put a port that's that slow. Does anyone know what might be causing this?

So the cable jack in your room probably has a splitter somewhere up the line, and I'm guessing your signal levels in the modem are terrible, so that's why it's so slow.

Even though most ISPs don't handle inside wiring, you may be able to get your isp come out to help you move the modem to your room, but it may or may not be free. This is why for new installations there's usually an installation fee--to help them fix any problems like this that they may run into.

Otherwise, you will need to trace the wires and find out what is going on.
