Greetings,
When I got my computer, everything worked fine and
dandy, that is speaking computer games wise. Then after
awhile, we (My Dad and I) deemed it necessary to reformat
the hard drive. So we got all the CD's from microsoft
together, and reformatted it.

Well, now all server based computer games don't work and
some games themselves don't work, and by server based
games problems I mean that the game or client itself
works, but when I go to play it online (specifically
Gamespy Arcade or games that have it integrated) it
either freezes up, or won't load any information. A "for-
instance" game that has this problem is Unreal
Tournament, and a client is the afore mentioned Gamespy
Arcade.

I have turned off the Internet Firewall, and I have no
other firewalls on this computer. Also, there are some
computer games that I had before the reformat that
worked, but now do not work. I get the following error
when attempting to start one:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not
suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows
applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

If someone could help me with both of these problems, I
would so greatly appreciate it.
Sincerely,
Michael Friedrich

Please help!

Hi Michael,

For the 1st problem, if you have a router, it would have to
be reconfigured to forward ports to your system again;

For the 2nd problem, you can solve that by replacing the file:

1. Browse to C:\WINDOWS\repair
Right-Click and Copy the file named: autoexec.nt

2. Browse to C:\WINDOWS\System32
Right-Click in that window to Paste the file
(Answer yes if prompted to replace existing file)

Jimmy,
Concerning my second question, I did what you told me
to, and it now works. Thanks!
But for the second one, how do I go about fowarding ports
to this comp? I have a linksys router, but there is no
computer attached to it. Show I hardwire one up to it and
get into it's settings? And once there, what do I do?
Thank you for your time, and I look forward to your
response.
Sincerely,
Michael Friedrich

Hi Michael,

Call Linksys tech support and ask them to setup the router
so that all ports required for DirectX games as well as UT
are forwarded. If you use the XP firewall, you can simply
put the computer in DMZ mode so that all ports are open.

Please See: http://mvps.org/nibblesnbits/howto.html

Online games are usually developed using Flash, Java, or Virtual Machine.
The most likely solution to a problem with an online game is to install, upgrade,
or reinstall the right one for the game site you're playing on.

A. For Zone.com games: Zone.com are converting most of their games for Flash
to avoid the conflicts between the Sun Java system and Microsoft's Virtual Machine.
Install Flash from: http://sdc.shockwave.com/shockwave/download/frameset.fhtml

B. Most other game sites still use Java. You can install Java and find more help
tips at this webpage: http://java.com/en/download/help/pogo.jsp

C. If the online game still won't load, or gives you errors, try these steps:

1. Click START / Control Panel / Internet Options and click on the Advanced Tab.

2. Below HTTP 1.1 is the Sun Java/ Microsoft VM section: Make sure all Java choices
are unchecked (especially JIT) and then press [OK]. You may be prompted to reboot.

3. If you don't see a Microsoft VM section then download Microsoft Virtual Machine for:
Windows 98 / Me / NT / XP from: http://www.abxair.com/software/msjavx86.exe

4. After you download Java, double-click the file to install it, reboot and then follow
the directions in Steps 1. and 2..to disable JIT compiler and other advanced options.

* Whenever you get a Java Virtual Machine Security Update from Windows Update, you
will have to follow Steps 1. and 2..to disable JIT compiler and other adv. options again.

6. If the problem persists Adjust Your browser settings using this basic example:
http://www3.sympatico.ca/nibblesnbits/EnterRooms.html#IE

7. Try these suggestions for Zone's Java Games:
http://classic.zone.msn.com/zzzz/help/helpjavagames.asp

8. Maybe it's a software conflict: Make certain that your Firewall or Antivirus program is
not configured to block Java Applets. Norton's products for example have that option.
If you're unsure temporarily disable Startup programs one at a time, starting with Firewall,
Antivirus & AdBlockers using: http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=331796
or this utility: http://new.jtsoft2001.com/windows/startup.php

9. If you have a Coffee Cup icon in your system tray (next to the time) you might have a
conflict between MS VM and Java: Uninstall Java using Control Panel / Remove Programs.

10. Check the Help / Support section of the game site in question for Java topics relevant to
that site. There is usually an email or a (non Java) help chat available as well. 🙂
