[SOLVED] Only 2 CPU cores out of 4 detected.

Hi yall

Recently I got a used i5 4690k CPU, plugged it in the motherboard and it works. The issue is that both BIOS and Windows do not recognize all 4 cores, but only 2 instead. Once again, the CPU works but I cannot get all 4 cores. In this link it says that the i5 4690k is not supported, but I believe it's an outdated article as there is no reason to not support an 1150 CPU. https://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/H81M-DG4/index.asp#CPU

I used more than 4 softwares all of them display only 2 cores available. Any idea what could be causing this issue?

That's not an article, that's a CPU support list for that board posted by manufacturer. If your 4690 is not there (and it is not) then it is not supported. Period.

When you did this 'swap' what did you swap from?

Did you happen to install the new chipset drivers or more specifically a clean install?

Aside from the possibility that you have an incompatible CPU/mobo combo it is highly likely that if you did the swap without also doing a clean install that the motherboard (drivers) are just assuming it's the same i3 you upgraded from (assumption based on core count).

The i5-4690K is a 88w chip.
The highest supported chip on the motherboard support list is 84w.

But, since you are working, the bios initialization may have gotten confused.
Go through the process to verify that all 4 cores are to be used.

Open msconfig and clear the Number of processors check box. Reboot so Windows can find all of your cores.
