Only 59 and 60hz showing up when I connected my Dell S2417dg asus laptop?

Connected a Dell S2417dg to my ASUS rog laptop and the only framerate that shows up is 60 and 59hz. Ive tried every resolution and it still only shows 60 and 59hz in settings.
The GPU i have is GTX 960m with hdmi cable connecting the laptop and monitor.
Id like to use my monitor in 144hz so this is quite annoying
Display port isnt an option either due to the fact that my laptop doesnt support display poer

You're using HDMI, and the 900 series GPUs had HDMI1.4.

The max supported refresh rate over the standard HDMI 1.4 @ 2560x1440 is 75Hz, although typically it was restricted in practice to 60Hz.

The monitor itself may only support HDMI1.4, leaving DisplayPort the only option to achieve >60Hz @ 1440p

None that support speeds higher than HDMI 1.4. You need a DP to DP connection to get 1440p >60 Hz on that monitor, or any G-Sync monitor.

As Glenwing covered off, DP to HDMI adapters exist, but that doesn't change the fact your "source" output is HDMI1.4
