Only 6 of 12gb ram usable

I have recently upgraded from just 4gb ram to 12gb and originally only 3.5gb was usable. I have done the msconfig process and that changed it so that 6gb of the 12 is usable but now I don't know why not all of it is usable.
Anyone got any suggestions as to how I can resolve this?

I suppose u upgraded to 12 gb by adding 8gb. Look mixing ram may or may not work. Maybe ur system is not recognizing the earlier 4gb anymore but only the new 8gb. Have u tried taking out the 4 GB ram? Do this and use only 8gb as mixing can cause problems later on. 8gb is more than enough for even gaming. More than that is waste unless u do very high end heavy gaming. In that case buy a new 16gb ram.
