only at 100 Mbps

Hello,

I've just upgraded my internet speed to 300 Mbps recently. So i swapped all my cat 5e cable to cat 6 but my HP laptop (not sure the model but a 400 USD HP laptop from 2016) only download around 90 Mbps and upload at 50 Mbps. I also tried it at my ps4 and able to get the download speed just below 300 Mbps. (the internet connection is wired, not wireless).

Thanks. Sorry for my bad english

hello,
I recommend using a wired computer and running a speed test. Typically speedtest.net is a great website to use. If your tests are around 300Mbps let me know, if not call your isp and complain.

A couple possibilities here:
1. You have a bad cable. Just because a cable is new does not mean it is working well. Since Ethernet bandwidth (speed) is negotiated between 2 devices, a little bit of noise or interference on the line can cause a speed drop (in this case, from gigabit to 100 Mbit).
2. Your laptop has an Ethernet port that is only capable of 100 Mbit connections. This is unlikely because gigabit has been the standard for a while.
3. A switch or other device between your laptop and the router is only capable of 100 Mbit connections.
4. Your laptop Ethernet is set to use 100 Mbit. Go to Device Manager->Network Adapters->right click your adapter and select properties->go to the advanced tab->scroll down to speed and duplex.
5. A bad port in your router. Switch the cable from the current port to another.

After this is less likely things, like some software limiting the speed or something.

Just to add to what anotherdrew is saying, I have personally experienced both #1 and #3 in that list. For #3, it was the actual modem/router that the ISP provided that had the 100Mbps limit on it.

After getting that changed, one of my PCs was still going only at 100Mbps. Changing the ethernet cable fixed that.

based on all the suggestion and my situation. i think the problem is my laptop have a bad ethernet port and doesn't have anything to do with modem, router or cable because my PS4 still manage to have speed beyond 200Mbps. I don't have other device to test the internet speed so i may just leave it be.

anyway, thanks for the tips
