Only getting 10 mbps instead of 100 mbps download speed

Hi

I'm paying for 100 mbps internet and I should be getting 100 mbps (that's what it says in my router properties) but I'm only getting 10 mbps. I know that 1 byte is 8 bits.

Can anyone help me?

There is a reset button on the back of the router. Push and hold for thirty seconds.

That's one of many possible solutions I offered in that internet troubleshooting list.
100mbps = 12.5MB/s

So be clear that your not confusing the two. You'll never get the full 100mbps due to networking overheads. Said overheads can account for 20% of the connections attainable rate, resulting in a real rate of less than that. 80% of attainable rate isn't uncommon.

80mbps = 10MB/s, hence, you'll need to double check the mbps vs MB/s thing.

Best way is to time a few downloads to see if you're getting 10mbps rather than 10MB/s.

The router properties is showing you the port speed which is 100mbps (the port speeds are 10mbps/100mbps/1000mbps) It doesn't represent the actual speed you bought or are getting.

Do some speedtest to see what you are actually getting. Spoeedtest.net or https://www.verizon.com/speedtest/
 


So? Do you still have an issue? http://www.speedtest.net/ and https://testmy.net/ are a couple sites where you can test your connection. A screenshot of the results may be helpful. Your ISP may have its own speedtest they want you to use.

You won't see the speed your ISP is offering at most any other sites. If those tests show you're not getting the full 100mbps then you need to talk to your ISP. The contractual agreement goes both ways. I was getting a LOT less than what my ISP should have been sending. I dealt with it for about a week and called them on a couple occasions to see if they could work it out. They couldn't and needed to realign my dish. Because of the level of service they were not giving me they credited my account accordingly. .Did they just throw money at me? No. I had to ask for that. They didn't just offer it. The calls were also on record and the tests I ran with the reps. was also on record.

And that will probably just make things worse because wireless connections are typically slower than their wired counterparts. Hardwired from modem to PC is usually the best. Routers can sometimes slow things down.
 
Ok, so it's reporting 1.3MB/s, or 10.4 mbps.

Go to your network adapter in Windows, right click, status. See the 'speed' reported. If that's a good speed, and your router isn't configured to limit your speed in any way, it's time to start testing your hardware.

Network cables (or wifi signal strength if applicable), router and PC network ports. Swap out the cable(s) for another. Try other network ports if available.

I'm replying just in case any one is like me and recently ran into this problem. If you own a DELL COMPUTER, UNINSTALL the SMARTBYTES program. This program is designed to direct most of your bandwidth to streaming. However, looks like it was poorly implemented because it will cap your download speeds even when you're not streaming. After hours of messing around with my NIC and router settings, this finally solved it.

That is an amazing answer, thanks ! Unistalling Smartbytes on my Dell finally solved it. went from 8 Mbps download on Speedtest to 93 Mbps ! (similar with another speed rating). :D Unbelievable, like you said, spent time fooling with other settings
