Only hearing right channel through HDMI

I use my tv as a monitor, connected via HDMI to a GTX960.

When I test the stereo sound, using video clips on youtube or in control panel, i cant hear anything when I'm supposed to hear just the left speaker.

When I'm supposed to hear just the right speaker, the sound plays through both of the speakers on my tv. So basically the gpu sees them as a single speaker I suppose.

Prior to this, i used to use the intel gpu from my i5 6500, and sound worked just fine. Only started happening since I got the 960.

MHL is port for a device similar to chromecast. https://www.digitaltrends.com/home-theater/what-is-mhl-and-how-does-it-work/

It's not your typical HDMI port and thats why its working with the HDMI port you're using now. Fyi, ARC just means audio return channel so if you had an receiver with ARC compatibility you could use this instead of an optical cable to get sound from the TV to the audio visual receiver but will still act as a normal HDMI port.

There might be a setting in your TV to change the MHL function to normal HDMI if you wanted to connect a console to it in future. Would be handy to know if there is a setting like that for your own benefit.

I don't have a laptop, but I tried switching back to the integrated gpu, and now it's the same problem there (it used to work just fine before). So I guess something changed when I installed the nvidia drivers, as that's the only change that has been made to the system.

Anyways, while writing this, I tried switching between all four HDMI inputs on the tv, and it seems that the one named as HDMI / ARC actually works, while the other 3 only produce the sound on the right channel. No idea why this is, but it's fixed. I was using HDMI / MHL prior to this.

Yeah, the MHL port is the most accessible on the tv, so I used it. I had no idea what the labels meant.

I've now read a bit about it, but still don't understand what changed, or why it used to work fine before on the integrated gpu. Maybe I'm just wrong, and I never noticed the left channel missing. Oh well, at least everything's fine now.

Resurrecting this thread because my problem returned once again.

I updated my nvidia drivers recently (only change made to the system), and now my left channel is fine, but I can't hear anything on the right. What gives?

Quick summary:
- Couldn't hear left channel on my tv (GTX960>HDMI>Sony TV)
- Changed HDMI ports, started working fine
- Updated NVidia driver, broke again, but now I can't hear right channel
- I hear left channel though both speakers.

Solution: Right click on speaker icon > speaker setup > change from stereo to 5.1.
