I was editing videos using Movie Maker on my laptop which is on Window 8.1, when the sound on the left side of my headphones were gone and there was some crackling sound. Sound on the right side of the headphones would play normally. I googled for a fix and came to a Youtube video and while watching, the crackling sound continued on the left side of the headphones.

I followed a guide that mentioned computer management > services and applications > services > windows audio, and then restarting windows audio. The crackling was no longer there but there was no sound coming from the left side of the headphones either.

I have tried the headphones on my phone and the same thing happened. Any idea on how to fix this? Any help is very much appreciated, thanks!

EDIT: you said you headphones crackled plugged into your phone too? then the headphones must have died.

did you restart your PC? with fast-restarting or whatever you may have to hold shift when you click restart in the start menu, although I haven't used windows 8 in a while.

Sorry, I should have been more specific. The crackling disappears after I restart Windows Audio. After that, there is very little sound coming out from the left side compared to the right side of the headphones. The difference is significant, where the left side is barely audible. I have checked the balance settings for the headphones, and the left and right side are equal. The crackling sound is no longer present when playing audio from any other device (phone, etc.) after restarting Windows Audio.
