Hi!

Reason behind the question is, I have managed to complete a PC out of some spare parts that I had for my cousin,

Ryzen 5 2600, Stock cooler
B450 Aorus elite
2 nvme ssds
16gb of ram 3000mhz cl16
EVGA gtx 1070 FTW that requires 2x8pin PCIe connectors,
And a Energon 650w PSU that only has one 8pin PCIe connector fot the GPU

At the moment Im sceptical to even power up the PC since Ive read some bad things regarding putting only one 8pin connector to a 16pin pin required gpu.

my question is, can I at least boot the thing up to see is everything working (not gonna put any load on the gpu besides the normal desktop stuff) on this one 8 pin connector ? And since Im not looking to spend any extra $ on this, is it a good long term solution just to get that molex to PCIe connector to populate the other slot in the gpu, since the gpu won't be overclocked or anything, it will be mainley used for school and some gaming.

No, it won't work. And you wouldn't want it to; if you have an Energon 650W PSU, you have a garbage-tier PSU made a long time ago and it shouldn't be used with any GPU that requires supplementary power.

Molex to PCIe is a great way to start a fire.

If you're unprepared to spend anything to properly power the GPU, sell the GPU and get a cheap GT 710 or something that will allow you to use the PC for general use.

Live and learn, thanks for the advice, I'll just set the project aside for the time being until I come acroess a good enough PSU to properply power the package, do you recon a decent 550W unit would be enough for the spec ?

Have stumbled uppon a Seasonic Core GC 650, will grab it if the price is fine
the core series is a ok model should be efficient enough for your rig i use one in a similar rig
i have been using corsair and seasonic for years.

yes not all of there psus are perfect cx line of corsairs is a mix bag.
ive yet to see a junk seasonic.

my advice stands though I will recommend doing research in reviews before you buy.

Not a lot of revewis for this one, but with what I found it should be okay, does come with a 7 year warranty which is nice.
