Only one computer on switch has internet access

Hello,

I have a problem. At school we had to connect every 2 computers to 5 port switch and then that switch to a bigger switch with 24 ports. We connected four 5 port switches with 2 computers to bigger switch. We saw eachother on network, but when we connected switch to the internet and set our adapter to DHCP, only 1 computer received internet connection.

Can someone explain if that should happen or we did something wrong?

And also, that computer that received connection had different IP and mask.

How many IP addresses are allocated to DHCP in the router ? If this is in a dorm or other situation, then the school IT department may have set it up so that every outlet can only have one IP address. You should probably ask the IT group for guidance.

I wouldn't connect home class switch to other home class switch. They have only one controller for all ports, etc. I'd use router besides first switch, and connect more switches to that router.

You could replace the 24 port switch with a router if you are allowed to have one. Even if you are allowed a router, you may have to disable any wireless functions. Again check with the IT group for guidance.

One more question regarding internet access. I'm not sure about only one IP address from outlet because before we connected all 4 switches to the big one, everyone had internet access. And after we connected those switches to the big switch + cable for internet connection only 1 PC got access.

The reason I ask, is that a 24 port switch is much more likely to be a "managed" switch. If what you pointed to is really the 24 port device you have, then it is only a 10Mbit device. It is unmanaged, so it doesn't have the potential problems I thought it might.

So, back to your drawing... WHY is there a need for the 24 port switch? Are these 4 satellite switches in different rooms and the 24 port in a basement or closet? Or was this some type of lab experiment?

It was an experiment. We had to connect all devices together to transfer files between computers to check speed but then I saw that only one computer got internet access and got curious.
