Only running 20 fps on dayz with r9 280x

Hi I am running a xfx r9 280x in my pc and have a 24 inch monitor running at 1080p. On dayz i was noticing lag and checked with fraps to see that i am running at 20 fps. Is this how intensive the game is or is there an issue?
I also have an i5 4670k

Have you updated the drivers?
Have you checked if there is any malware?

all drivers have been updated and have got no malware any other solutions

What settings are you running? DayZ is actually a very demanding game, I pull 30~ fps with a MSI Gtx 770 TF on all maxed settings. I turned my settings down to medium and get a stable fps of 60~ at 1080p.
