Im dedicating this post to those special times in my computing life when something looks so amazing i just sat there saying 'wooooo' and admiring the view.

FIRST TIME:

When i first played doom the original on my own PC. What a RUSH! By todays standards the graphics and engine is laughable, but back then it was soooo realistic! Gloomy coridors, forbiding pitch black areas... I jumped out my chair when a pinkie demon unexpectedly came round the corner screaming in a darkened corridor!
Woooooooo what a rush!

SECOND TIME:

Back many years ago I had just got my my new beast of a system. P166, 32mb ram and a 4Mb 2d card. I bumped the resolution up to 1024x768 with an unheard of 32bit color depth and loaded the best windows wallpaper i could find.
Woooooooo purdy!

THIRD TIME:

When I first got quake2 working in openGL mode on my ATI ragepro 4mb PCI card.
Woooooooo the colours... the shades! 😱

FOURTH TIME:

When i first played Unreal Tournament 2000 with a TNT2 and looked at map CTF-Face.
I remember standing there in the middle getting shot to death just looking at the visuals and the rotating planet earth.
Woooooooo headrush! [laughs]

FIFTH TIME:

Its been a longtime comming... 3 years infact. But my latest 'woooooo' would have to have been playing serious sam the second edition with my New R9800pro with all eyecandy settings maxxed out.
Woooooooo eyyyyyyyyye candy!

Do you have any 'special' moments?

Special moments?....Ohhhh yea...
Actually, I'm going to spare the forum of all the potentially gross comments that are sure to spew forth from my mouth.
Be thankful.

I help because you suck.

My dad bought his first 3D accelerator boards. It was a Trident Blade3D 8 MB *cough*. I opened up Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II and I was amazed when I turned on 3d Rendering. For hours I was saying "They fixed it! They finally fixed it! OMG this is unbeleivable. I stared at the graphical beuaty of the Jedi Knight Engine whith all of its clean texture filtering. I was amazed & hooked too "3dfx" as it was called back then.

My OS features preemptive multitasking, a fully interactive command line, & support for 640K of RAM!

there was a time, when i was playing half-life, in the part where i'm crawling in a ventilation system, (i was so calm) and a headcrab suddenly pops out, scared me to death.

The original Unreal (the FPS, for those of you who are really picky). There's a level, I think it was before the Sunspire, but I'm not sure, where you are in a canyon with mountain sides. It was so beautiful on my Voodoo2. I just went up a hill to look at the stars and the red moon...
It is still the only time I paused in a game just to take in the visuals.

GW, HEhe! 😎

LGHPB, my experiences like that were;

a) The Original MS Decathalon game for the IBM PC. Seriously a guy who jumped, ran, etc. COOL!

b) Programming my first graphical game on that same PC. A Skiing Game. OOohhh 'I made this!' (like the tv production company jingle)

b) remembering there is only One 'B' in the alphabet.

c) First time I played Castle Wolfensteing-3D on my PS2 Laptop (hooked up to an 13" EGA monitor).

d) First time playing Morrowind.

e) First time seeing the water effects with my R8500DV 3Dmark 01. Freaking amazing to me at the time.

f) First time seeing the <A HREF="http://www.daionet.gr.jp/~masa/rthdribl/index.html" target="_new">rthdribl</A> demo with my R9600P.

Those are the main one's that come to mind.

Got to agree, Doom was just the dog bollocks when it came to games. I remember using a mates notebook to play it on, sitting in bed in barracks playing it, with the lights off and the sound just up a little. Played for an hour, and when I shut my eyes, all I could see was those demons and the sound going round my head was the noise they made.

Ahh, happy days.

<font color=blue>"Some people believe football is a matter of life and death. I'm very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that" - Bill Shankly</font color=blue>

my first oooooo expirience was seeing full motion video on my computer. it was from some encyclopedia cd. my pitiful old computer couldnt handle it well, low color and the sound was garbled. it was great lol. next was doom, that actually scared me, not a jump out startle kind of scared. i was playing and got to one of those pink demon things running around, but this one was invisible. that sound and not knowing where it came from, i had to turn it off for a while and go outside lol. next was half life, i was so amazed and the size and complexity of the levels. and the accuracy of the models. then maybe the affects of quake 3 and how they looked on my geforce 1. and most recently the steam preview downloads of half life 2. those are DAMN impressive.

Yea i only saw the half life 2 and stalker previews the other day, all i could say was B.S. and F off, i watched em both about 5 times.

I'm not speaking directly to you jihiggs, but to gamers in general. It really annoys me to death that I always see people saying "Doom was the start of 3D gaming". I would have to completely dissagree with this on the utmost level. I'm not trying to pick fights here. In fact I really enjoyed Doom even though I didn't play it much. I assure everyone, that even inspite of Doom's amazing graphics & gameplay it is NOT the start of gaming. I know this is coming back along time ago, but has anyone heard of Catacomb's 3D, this was the start of 3D First Pirson Shooters. I've never even seen screenshots of it myself, I've just heard it used a similar engine to Wolfenstein 3D. Now Wolfenstein 3D WAS the game that revolutionized 3D gaming. I assure you that if Wolfenstein would have failed as a commercial gaming software, then Doom would have never existed. I know most will dissagree with me on this, and I'll never really understand why. Wolfenstein was my first and biggest "oooooooooooooooooooo" in my whole life as a gamer. Doom was not as big of an "ooooo" as Wolfenstein 3D was for me.

People are always bragging about how Quake brought 3D textured models and polygons into gaming. Maybe they did to the FPS genre, but 2 years before Quake there was a game called Descent that looked great and had full 3D support. Descent is yet another technological advance in games that all to frequently gets neglected. I actually enjoy playing the original Descent more than I enjoy Quake. I play Descent to this very day. Its one game I don't think I'll ever give up for good. And yes, Descent was my second "ooooo".

My OS features preemptive multitasking, a fully interactive command line, & support for 640K of RAM!

Catacombs, and Catacombs-3D were also ID titles (makers of Wolfenstein 3D). I played Wolfenstein first since I liked the APPLE 2D version. HALT! Your Pass! Anywhoo, truely Wolfenstein was the one that changed things because it was the one that drew EVERYONE in. That's why it was on my list.

Descent was OK but gameplay sucked a bit IMO. It reminded me of playing the infamous line some of you may be familiar with, "You are in a maze of twisty little passages, all alike.".

Oh well graphics are good, text is bad. Long live 'XYZZY' and 'All your base are belong to us!' 😎

Wolf3d i played alot yes, but i kinda got a decent computer too late... so really the wooo factor wasnt there for me as by that time the PC's had got better and doom and doom2 were around.

Had i got a better PC earlier then i may have woooo'ed for wolf.
As it was it was too simplistic. flat floors and square walls.

oh and i never got into descent. dunno why

Still get freakouts remembering the red cacodemons?
Or how about the lovely Mastermind coming from a corner, turning at you, and drilling away that machine gun?
For best experience, equip headphones, turn it up loud and at night with no lights, guaranteed that no 7.1 Surround THX System will match it!
