I tried to format my Sony Vaio (svs1511n3es). I formatted the partitions first and then proceeded to the instal of the win7 cd. The cd had a problem so I had to restart and put another one. Since then, I get a message "Operating System not found". The computer does not boot from the cd or the flash drive (both fat32 and ntfs) although I changed the boot priority from the bios settings (F2). I put a cd of win7 32bit and I successfully installed the windows (I still do not know how the cd was recognized). But I want x64 as my laptop will work better on that. I tried to format again and still I get the message of the operation and the cd/flash won't load. It is just like I do not have a cd or flash connected to my pc. What should I do ? I tried many things like changing the bios settings (uefi or legacy) etc.

scandisk USB drives can cause heavy issues with booting because of the U3 software embedded. If you have the 64 Bit (Retail) windows CD use it and not the stick. If your creating a boot USB I recommend using a PNY USB stick. Describe how and what method you are using to make a bootable disk? or aree you using a CD?

I put all the files of the win7 installation cd to the usb (ntfs or fat32, I tried both) and then I connect it to the laptop. BIOS settings are set to load first from external drive , then optical and then disk.

The problem is that the cd does not load as well. I get the message "Operating System not found". I put the win7 32bit cd that was accepted for loading (i do not know how) and still the same message. I am pretty stuck and I have a web interview with vrigin media in some hours.

The reason, You "Put the files" meaning you simply copied them to the stick. This will never work because the stick is not bootable in its current state. I would suggest that you read "How to make a USB bootable disk" or use a ISO utility that will read all settings from the CD and then install them to the USB making them bootable.

Also, Press the F12 boot selection key during startup. The reason it worked before without this is because you deleted the partitions, now that it has a partition it is trying to boot from it and no seeing the files.

A web interview? I hope is doesn't require this laptop. If so I would not count on the reload, and driver installation steps to be completed in 2 hours. It is possible, but I am guessing that you may have issues on the way. Don't mess with your paycheck, use another computer for that web interview

Now the win7 32bit dvd worked. Should I install windows ? and then try to format again with the x64 dvd?

PS: Will the usb work ? It has exactly the same files as the dvd.

I would like to add that now, if i try to instal win7 32 , whenever I choose a partition (only one is visible) i get the message "setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing"

it should load into a window that allows you to add , remove, or change partitions. If this laptop is relatively new it may require additional raid drivers to access the partitions but I doubt it. You mentioned it tried to install before and failed, I worry that the drive itself is malfunctioning. Your BIOS may have a drive testing utility. Use it

The thing is that I installed win7 32 before from a dvd and I had no problem with the partitions. Now I have although the pc booted from the dvd. This is a second problem. Even if I make my flash drive bootable, I believe that I will stick in this partition stage.

agreed, I think it will snag at the partitions as well. Test that drive, something is not right with it. Try erasing it again then run the CD's. A usb boot will not change this error. when windows is trying to read the partition tables its not getting anywhere. It could have been corrupted from the attempted load and crash (We hope because that's just garbage software and will be erased when you delete it again) if not its a possible physical issue with the drive so test it using a utility in the bios or usb bootable drive utility

VAIO assist and generally the buttons are not in use. I deleted the partition of the recovery. Now I am installing the 32bit windows. So that proves that the disk is fine. It;s just a software issue I pressume. I will try again in 4-5 hours.

Partitions are SOFTWARE, they are bits of data stored on a platter to define the OS partition , thus the vio diags are to test the hardware itself. If it passes the diags then the software needs to be erased as outlined in the manuals as well as steps provided here. If it bombs on the install from a bad CD then try another CD

I cannot test the hardware from the BIOS. There is no option. Ok, here is the thing :

01) I tried to format with a corrupted cd after I deleted the partitions.
02) I tried to do it again with a cd that I used in the past successfully (32/64 bit version cd).
03) I got the message "Operating System Not Found".
04) I switched the BIOS mode from UEFI to LEGACY.
05) I was continuously trying to boot from the cd but it did not work most of the times.
06) Finally, it did work ! But I had 32bit version.
07) I tried to reinstall windows by using another dvd but I would get the message "setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing" when I selected the partition. I got the same message even with the dvd that worked before !
08) I tried to make a new dvd with Win7 Professional N 64bit with SP1 (Legaly downloaded from Dreamspark).
09) I installed the windows although it took long in the "Installing Features" part.
10) Windows 64bit version installed but it is very slow. I installed the drivers and nothing changed.
11) I got some strange messages like "Duplicate Memory Free operation. Get a stack trace and report bug against the calling app (not against OLE Automation)" and "Internet explorer encountered a validation error".
12) I changed the BIOS mode to UEFI again as it was and it now says again "operation system not found".
13) I switched it back to LEGACY and windows start again but with the same problems I mentioned.
