ive got an old laptop. MSI GX60 and im trying to refurbish it so that i can give it to a family member.

the hardware is all good (as far as i can tell) but it refuses to accept an operating system.

ive tried win 7, win 10, linux mint, and ubuntu. win 7 just refuses to install outright giving the following error.

"windows cannot be installed to this disk the computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computers bios menu".

but windows 10 and the linux distros will go through and fully install on the hard drive successfully with no errors. when i try to boot from the drive that the operating system was just installed on it reads that nothing is there and just goes straight to the bios boot menu or any other bootable option depending upon what is enabled in the bios. i have successfuly installed ubuntu before but once i tried to move to other operating systems it now has the same problem as the other operating systems.

what am i doing wrong? ive tried every combination of partitions and and formats and operating systems that i can think of and i still get the same result. i doubt its a bad hard drive because it reads just fine in every command line or partition wizard i use (i could be wrong) but i dont have another that i can swap out to make sure.

please help.

its an HDD. 750 GB. i think it might be a seagate but im not sure. im running a full format on it right now so i cant pull it out.

i had linux mint on it but right now im running a full format so its blank at the moment.

its not losing any of my settings in the bios and the timing is consistent when i boot to a linux usb drive. so i dont THINK its the CMOS. due to the build of this machine i cant get to the battery to test it with a multi-meter to make sure.

its in AHCI mode with boot security disabled. ive also tried legacy boot and uefi boot for all operating systems. same result

i reformatted it and tried to install it, same problem.
i tried both SATA ports internal to the laptop.
running chkdsk right now. i dont think it will tell me anything useful

im thinking its a bad HDD but im not confident. apparently best buy has a 15 day return policy. im about to go out and grab a new internal real quick just to see if thats my problem. it is a WD Black HDD thats several years old. from what ive heard the lifespan on those isnt that great. theyre fast but they burn out relatively quickly.

anybody else seen anything like this?
