Hi all,

I'm posting this in this forum as this should be totally considered not serious! It's just a bit of fun between us but we feel this needs resolving!

It's a bit of a strange one: I was installing a PSU in my friend's PC temporarily while he is waiting for a replacement and connecting everything up. While I was checking whether I had connected everything up, he said to me “have you connected the disk drive”. My initial thought was that he just meant hard drive, due to the full name being hard disk drive, but I later found out he meant the optical drive.

So, the question: In this scenario, what would you have assumed? Hard drive or optical drive?

Solution
Depends who said it.

A layman, I would assume the "drive that I put a disk in" = optical drive.

Someone with a decent amount of understanding, I could take it either way but would probably clarify or assume optical drive.

Honestly, I don't think I'd ever take "disk drive" as meaning HDD unless I'd heard the person use it in that context before.
