I am nearing completion on a new classified advert website specifically
designed for the advertising of guns and gun-related
equipment/products.

Our aim is provide a low-cost, high profile online marketplace with a
host of features to take the hassle away from both buyers and sellers
to allow them to get on and sell/buy with as little effort as possible.

For example, what categories of items would people like to be able to
advertise? (e.g. guns, scopes, cabinets...)

I would like to open up this topic to allow anyone to express their
opinions on what they would like to see in such a site, and what would
be beneficial in making buying and selling these products easier.

Hi chrisu,

Thanks for your response.
Yes, I know guntrader well - I'm up to speed with what is offered
there. We have also researched into other online solutions and had
input from gun dealers and private individuals. This, combined with our
own personal experience, has allowed us to get where we are now.

The aim of this is to allow fresh input from people who don't know what
we currently will have to offer when we go live (i.e. we don't want to
put ideas in people's heads).

Any comments are appreciated, no matter how small you may consider it
to be.
e.g. if you're a trade user, you may want a feature whereby user's can
browse all your adverts in one list - effectively an online shop window
for your business.

Regards

you mean you haven't looked at guntrader yet? - bit more research
required - i.e. what do the current people in this area do and what
unique offering do you have.

So far answer looks like don't know and none.

John,
Thanks - that's exactly the kind of thing I'm looking for.

You've touched on one aspect that I've identified as key to helping out
buyers (and sellers) - the ability to easily and quickly find an item
based on specific criteria such as location. I have given a lot of
thought to this and so have designed this aspect of the site with this
in mind.
We will shortly be registering as an RFD and so will be able to offer
the facility to do gun transfers - this should help take the hassle out
of the process for those that need it.

We want to make everything as hassle free as possible for buyers and
sellers.

Thanks again for your input.

Hi Derry,

We have considered having an auction section, although at present we
have no plans to include one and have put all attention to other areas.
It may be something we reconsider if there is plenty of demand for it,
but not in the foreseeable future. But we will track the demand for
features and act on those that are being voiced frequently.

Thanks

I've designed it to make finding the right gun (scope, or any other
item for that matter!) as easy as possible. Not only to make it easier
for buyers, but also to provide a more effective service to seller's by
making their items easier to find.

It's good to hear your views on the "transfer service" - these are very
similar to what we are planning to offer.

What would be good?

Categorys that can be sorted in to regions (nothing worse than finding
the right "gun" only then to have the hassle of trying to talk an RFD
in to helping you out" be nice to have the search option of " In your
area " or " with-in 30 miles" etc etc.

List of RFD's who would be happy to receive a firearm or affiliated RFD's

Lot's of pictures for the listings, I have always felt that Guntrader
has pi$$ poor pictures.

Fast & hassle free listings for private sellers!!!

It's too hot...duno anymore.

Has anyone suggested an auction section? I have been perusing adverts for
an air rifle and see this facility is available on some sites.

I think thats why Ebay is so good, it's mainly hassle free. You find,
you bid, you win, you pay with paypal, your item is delivered... well
most of the time!

Fast easy transactions are the only way your site is going to make it
but if you get it right, you'll make a fair bit of money.
I find that with Guntrader, it's one thing actually finding the right
gun and another actually getting the gun.

Here is a good idea, Do a deal with a courier service to deliver "guns"
at a fair price. Then contact main gun shops around capitol cities or
what not.

Right, the seller lists the gun and can opt for "your added service" (at
a cost), which is to have the gun collected and delivered to an RFD in
the buyers nearest capitol city. If the seller isn't interested this
"extra" service can be offered to the buyer. In which case, the buyer
notifies the seller, sends payment to the seller and to you. The gun is
then collected, and sent to the nearest RFD to the seller. Hassle free
gun buying.

The trouble with that idea is that individual couriers do not cover the
whole country and they seem to arrange between themselves to pass items on
to the companies that cover the area the destination is in. Badly worded,
but you'll get the jist!<g>

I sold a .410 a few years back and could not find a courier who would
take it. In the end, I sent the gun " Special delivery" in three
packages via RM at a cost of almost £40 !
Luckily the gun got to the RFD (albeit in three) and there wasn't a
problem. RM will not ship whole guns BTW, or so I was told.

Neither RM nor Parcel Force include shotguns in their list of prohibited
items published in their respective information booklets. Neither will
carry handguns and ParcelForce won't take "loading rifles".

When I inquired I was told " Sorry we can not deliver "guns" anymore ",
so in response I shipped only bits of guns :)

You could always offer a 25% discount to those here who have given free
advice. That would encourage trade...

No, just a small farmer looking for a free hand out.<g> Asking for a
discount is just force of habit.

Do you have any other shooting-related item's that you might want to
advertise, aside from guns? We're looking to add in extra categories if
there is a demand for them in order to provide a comprehensive service.
It's very much a case of letting the community help develop/evolve the
site so that we can provide an effective service.

Just a couple of points.....

When you look in a catogory, the price is not displayed, unless there is a
current bid. If you listed the starting price, it would encorage people to
look at more items IMO.

When you have current bids, when you look at your list of buds, it shows the
date/time that you placed the bid, but not the time/date the auction ends -
far more important!

Otherwise, a good site, even if not many people seem to be using it
yet.......

Hi Graham,

Our site is currently not live so you must be looking at a different
site?

We will not be an auction site, but a classified ad site. We're aiming
to launch within the next month/2 months.

Archived from groups: uk.rec.shooting.game (More info?)

Just to add, we have found a nationwide courier that we will be using.
The only restriction being that they cannot hold guns over weekends and
so we will have a cut-off point for transfers (probably each Thursday).

By offering this service, we hope that the whole issue of location is
no longer a problem when looking for a gun.
