I am buying an entire new system and I have a choice of a FREE upgrade to an
HP Pavilion vf17 LCD instead of their 17 CRT.

Anyone here own one of these?

How are they for gaming?

Normally I would stay away from an LCD but hell it's a free upgrade right.

If it's FREE I doubt it's an "upgrade" at all. For gaming CRT is
better, and I would "upgrqade" to a 19" CRT. Yes, I do own an LCD but
that is on my second PC, my gaming PC uses CRT.

Check the specs. At least 400:1 Brightness and less than 16ms response
time. Otherwise stick with the CRT.

Tried to do that but HP does not publish those specifics anywhere AFAIK.

Yea I looked as well. I'd say stick with the CRT for now.
I don't think many HP systems include gaming quality video cards either.

Well I opted for an X600 Pro PCIE with DVI so that's better than the 9200
agp I have now. HP doesn't give you much options but over-all this system
is miles better than my workhorse and it's 64 bit. That may be important in
a few years.

Tried to make my purchase as futureproof as possible.

I normally just build my own system but in this case it I think it's
actually cheaper to buy theirs. Don't feel like mucking around with another
system build either.

Aint familiar with HP, but I just upgraded my 17 in lead filled CRT for a
light 5 lb WestingHouse 19in LCD monitor. The pictures are perfect, like
playing on a different machine. I paid only $350 from Best buy.

What's the respnse time of that LCD? I have an older 30ms response
time LCD and a 19" CRT. I can tell the images are moving much smoother
on the 19" CRT. Gaming on the LCD is ok but it's not good enough for
me. You need at least a 16ms response time LCD for gaming IMO and I
doubt that the *free* upgrade HP LCD is offering is 16ms or lower. I
used my LCD exclusively for a year and then one day decided to go back
to CRT because I didn't like how my older games that were stuck at low
resolutions looked on the LCD but then I also noticed how much
smoother the games animation moved too. And then of course the blacks
were much richer and colors more accurate on the CRT also. LCD's do
look cool though and they are completely flat, use a lot less power so
they put out a lot less heat, plus text looks sharper and they have
perfect geometry.
