Hi Everyone,

Need a few opinions on upgrading from my GTX 970 FTW+ ACX 2.0+ (04G-P4-3978-KR ) to a RTX 2070 GAMING (08G-P4-2017-KR).

I saw this EVGA upgrade program where they will give me $75 for my 970 and I can upgrade to a 2070. My price range for graphics cards is about $300 - $350. So this upgrade program I can swing the RTX 2070 for about $375, which I am willing to go a little over 😉

Anyone have experience with this particular 2070? Are there any gochas I should be looking for?

This card seems like an entry level 2070 so I am a little concerned if I will really notice a difference. And from what I read the ray tracing is pretty taxing so will it be worth the upgrade in that aspect?

Pretty excited on upgrading but at the same time a little hesitant.

Any input would be great.

Thanks!

Current Build
CPU - i7-8700K
MB - z390-E
MEM - 16GB
PS - 750W
GPU - 970 FTW+ ACX 2.0+

Entry level in what sense ? The RTX 2070 is a high-end GPU, and that EVGA model is just a custom made model, similar to all other AIB Models/SKUs. RAY TRACING is currently in it's infancy stage.

It seems we are basically paying an "early adopter" price for this new Turing tech/hardware, hence the premium. I know Nvidia has totally changed the GPU arch as well, with the addition of new RT and Tensor Cores, and other design/pipeline improvements (memory/cache) etc.

But to take proper advantage of this hardware, very few games and software are currently out in the market. So basically the hardware won't get fully utilized (if we think from this perspective). Also, how well some of the upcoming Games will actually perform on a TURING GPU, with Real time ray tracing and DLSS, still remains to be seen. I think it will take at least another 2-3 years for this whole RTX technology to become mainstream.

As of now, few PC titles are going to take full advantage of this new RTX feature, provided Game developers also adopt and implement ray tracing, and DLSS deep learning AA in games as well. Still, it's good to see new Tech being released. With time things might settle down a bit, and the performance gain might be there when DLSS and Ray Tracing features are enabled.

You need to decide whether you really need Ray tracing in games, and whether it's worth enabling it for some better shadows/reflections/Global illumination etc, at the cost of few frames, if not using DLSS.. RTX has been kind of a mixed bag. What's the make/model number of your PSU ?

BTW, I'm sorry. I forgot to mention this before.

Don't buy any GPU at this time of year. Just WAIT for a few more weeks, since NVIDIA and AMD both are going to launch next-gen GPUs, the RTX SUPER series (which is basically just a refresh though), as well as the mainstream AMD NAVI GPUs. These might be worth looking into, IMO.

Hey thanks for that info and your input. I guess I shouldn't have used the term "entry level" but it seemed like it was lowest cost 2070 that I could choose from on the upgrade program site.

It sounds like if I do end up buying the 2070 it definitely will be future proof for awhile. To be honest ray tracing isn't that big of a deal to me yet so I also don't mind taking your advice and waiting to make a purchase. The think is that these GPUs are so dang expensive now!

My current PSU is a "Corsair - Professional 750 W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-modular ATX Power Supply". So far it's been a great PSU with no issues at all.

In the end I will prob just wait until my 970 really starts to struggle with these new titles. I play a bit of Star Citizen, BFV, SoT, and looking forward to see how Cyberpunk 2077 and Borderlands plays out. I am a pretty casual gamer these days so not worried about the latest and greatest.

Thanks again for your input it was very helpful!

Okay. No problem at all. If you need further help and scarification, then kindly ask once again. I'm here to help you guys (based on my limited knowledge though). You have a very good PSU. And yes, I agree these RTX series cards have been very expensive compared to previous GEN GPU models.

Maybe AMD's upcoming NAVI GPUs might be worth looking into.
