I'll be building a new computer soon, based around a Phenom II x4 955. Which of these two would be better as far as keeping the CPU at a reasonable temp (read as: 40s under load stock) for the price? the A50 is $23 after MIR and the A70 is $33, so I would go ahead and assume the a70, but it's quite a bit larger than the a50 and that makes me worry a bit as far as fitting RAM into the ASRock 870 Extreme3 I'm getting.

Oh, and first post on the forums.

If you mount the H-70 in the rear 120mm fam spot it will not be anywhere near the RAM , works good there .

i think that both of you miss read his post...he is asking about the A50 and A70 air coolers.

ok oneblackened......please tell us more information on your system build please? Do you have high profile memory? what board are you using? What case?

generally CPU coolers are designed to give you a little bit of leeway as far as RAM sticks go and should fit no problem. I would go with the A70 since it has dual fans in a push pull configuration and seems like a stout cooler that would keep your temps in check.

Are you planning on overclocking?? If so whats your goal?

re is a good review on both the A50 and A70 along with my cooler (the coolermaster V6GT and another cooler) good comparison of all 4 coolers in about the same price range

The A70 actually performs better than I thought read this--------> http://www.legitreviews.com/article/1389/6/

The cooler should have dimensions available before you buy it to help you figure out if it will fit. might have to do some measuring and will need to find the size of the ram as well, but...

agreed.

The A50 performs pretty well for the price and you can just throw on another 120mm fan on their and you will pretty much have your self an A70 cooler

As I said, I'm using an AsRock 870 Extreme3 AM3 board. The case will be either an NZXT Lexa S or a Thermaltake A90 (haven't decided yet). RAM is Corsair XMS3, non-dominator heat sinks, so not high profile as far as I'm aware.
I am attempting to overclock, 3.8GHz is my goal.

And yes, I'm talking about the air coolers. The H series is both out of my range and not my first choice in that range.

it really depends on what you want then. I say get the A50...and then later on add a 2nd 120mm fan your self and TADAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!! you have an A70

use a good thermal compound and make sure you manage your cables good because they can block a good amount of air flow!!!

personally i like the Thermaltake A90 but to each his own :D
