Opinions on Ilyama 4431, 4315? Specs inside...

Hello,

I was wondering how this stacked up against the other top monitors, like the Compaq 7020 and 8030. I know these are 17" and the 8030 is 18", but the one Ilyama is 17.4", so I think it's close enough to compare with. It looks like they have similar specs, a little less in some areas, but better in other areas. I've read many good things about Ilyama on their CRT monitors, but not much about LCD's. Any thoughts?

There are only a few manufg. that make the actual LCD screens so by the looks of the specs it's the same one on the planar pv174 and the VG175 from Viewsonic. Maybee other 17.4 as well with similar specs.

Now,my question is, how do these monitors compare with the Compaq 7020? With a brightness of 220, good contrast at 400, and a 35ms response time, these seem like pretty good monitors(Planar PV174, Princeteon SENergy 750). They can be found for $700 or so, which is fairly inexpensive relatively.

What makes the Compaq's better? I am pairing this monitor to a new PC, Athlon XP 1900+, 1024MB RAM, GF3 Ti500 card, so I want to try and get the best monitor I can...

the TFT7020 has a 25ms response time, which is deffinitly important. I play all kinds of games, and watch DVDs and DivX movies on my screen and its simply awesome. So far I havn't gotten a DVI video card yet and I'm still amazed with the quality.

Oops, I made a typo...both the Planar PV-174 and Princeton SENergy 750 have 25ms response times(I mistakenly typed 35). So, they are even in that regard. They use the same screen, so they have a 220n brightness and 400:1 contrast ratio and they also have a USB port which is convenient. At $699 shipped for a Planar, it seems like a very nice deal. Is there something I am missing?

VERY interesting about the Planar PV174 and Princeton SENergy 750. I've seen the Planar going for $700, but the Princeton is going for around $800. The specs are very very similar between the three monitors, so the question is are there any downsides? Off the the internet for more info. 😉

Exactly what I'm thinking. The Planar seems to have similar specs and features, and a couple extras as well. The Planar also allows you to pivot the screen 90 degrees if you wish. If it's going to save me $100-$150, I'll jump on it. I have no way of seeing them in person though. The only thing is a brightness of 220. I don't know how that relates, but some have said they get too bright too...

220nits of brightness is plenty enough most CRT screens hardly do around 170nits.
 
Thanks, that was the assumption I was going under, so 220 was going to be plenty. The Solaris is like 800, that seems like it would be blinding...
 
There is one thing I would watch out for. Manufacturer rated specs are questionable at best, and of course seeing all three panels with your own eyes would be ideal, while not likely. There have been many reports of the Compaq TFT7020s and TFT8030s from owners that state almost zero ghosting in games (even at high framerates). On the other hand, I've seen quite a few reports from Planar 17.4" owners (CT & PV models) of very noticeable ghosting at high framerates.

Now, it could be that all of the Planar, Viewsonic, Princeton owners, etc simply have better eyes and perception, but I'm betting my money that the Compaq displays ARE actually better in the pixel response department.

I guess I'll see for myself when the TFT7020 arrives.
 
Yes, I have a hard time believing the PV174 is 25ms. The ghosting was very noticeable. However, I may just be picky, I would really like to actually SEE a non-MVA 17" with a 25ms response to say for sure (like the Compaq).

Ghost-ing?? Is it that thing I DON'T see on my TFT7020:) Yeah, there definetly is no ghosting in games, and it just looks awesome. Oh, and that thing about teh owner's eyes not being good, well, I have better than perfect vision, and notice refresh rates of 100Hz, so my eyes are VERY picky. Ghosting is gone in my TFT7020.

Only if you let me see the Umpa Lumpa- Homer Simpson.
 
There's your proof that what the specs say don't necessarily mean jack. Two different monitors with 25ms response yet one shows more ghosting than the other. Again, either try to find one in a store or make sure there's a good return policy. 😉
 
What u say is VERY true. The L365, which is a sweet ass monitor shows some ghosting in things that are 25FPS+, where as say TFT7020 doesn't. There are....shortcuts....one can take when measuring the response time.

Thanks everyone for the information. If I can't get to the store to put these through the test, I think the many positive comments(here and other places I've looked) on the 7020 have me picking that one up.

Hey Frankjp,

If you do find a store that has them (CDW does, but has a restricted return policy on them), post here. I also live in the Chicago area and would rather buy one from a store that fully guarantees them than doing it mailorder (although mailorder from Compaq is really fine). Just a personal preference.

I've found some smaller places just by using the locate retailer link on Compaq's site, but it doesn't look too promising. I will likely order in 2-3 weeks or so, if I can hold off :) I'll post here if I find something...

buy.com has the TFT8030 in stock and ready to be shipped and the price is cheaper than on compaq site.
 
Compaq's site lists the TFT7020 as 25ms typical while the TFT8030 is listed at 20ms.

I doubt TFT8030 is really 20ms unless Compaq can verify the claim.
