Opinions on motherboard and CPU options

I was wondering if anyone could give me any opinions on my motherboard and CPU options. The PC build would be for common tasks, such as internet searches, youtube, school, etc. Also it would be for gaming; games such as GTA V. Being able to overclock is not important to me, however I would probably overclock if I went with the Intel build, because why not? Also, if I went with AMD, should I overclock? Here are my options:

Either A, the AMD build:
CPU: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113499
Motherboard: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813119097

or B, the Intel build:

Motherboard: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIACVB7AE7228

Are those your only options? As said above, either of those are probably overkill for you purposes.

As far as which is better, the 8700k would probably perform a bit better in the cases you mentioned, although there's a good chance you'd never notice a difference between the two. The intel build also costs $180 more (plus CPU cooler).

For gaming an i5 8600k or ryzen 2600(x) is more than enough. You will barely notice the difference between those and the higher end chips as these just have more cores which are simply not used in games. The difference between the intel and amd builds is minimal and unless you do high refresh rate gaming you won't notice it at all.

Those aren't my only options, I have any option anyone comes up with. I was definitely misleading in my question I think, because with this PC my main concern is gaming performance. So, for games like GTA V or maybe Skyrim, is the 8700k still overkill? Should I go with maybe the 8600k instead?

The thing is that GTA V isn't the best example as it is 5 years old and not the most demanding game out there. If you want to play all sorts of top notch games, then yes, 8700K makes sense.

As you can see in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZIVaGcax70&t=37s the 8700K is kicking anything else's butt when it comes to hard core gaming. It actually made me buy it myself, just got it today ;-)

Good luck!

What resolution and refresh rate of monitor do you plan on using, and what GPU?

Maybe we could start a discussion regarding this topic, as it involves me too. I have the i7-8700K and plan on using it with a 4K 60 Hz monitor, GPU is GTX 1080 Ti. Am I good to go? :)

@Tomas1020 if you're gaming at 4K the GPU is almost always going to be the limiting factor, you're unlikely to see any difference between a good CPU and a great CPU. You have the 2nd best gaming CPU on the market (which was the single best until very recently), it's not going to hold you back. Also, in general if you have a question you should start your own thread, not hijack other people's.

I just plan on a 1080p resolution and am not sure about the monitor refresh rate yet, as I have not researched that too much yet. I also plan on getting a GTX 1080.

If you were doing 1080p 60 Hz then you wouldn't really see much difference between Rzyen 5/7/Intel i5/i7. But a GTX 1080 is overkill for 1080p 60 fps gaming. If you step up to a high refresh rate monitor, that's where your choice of CPU may start to make a noticeable difference.

Ok, after really researching it, I have decided to go with a 1440p resolution and 144hz refresh rate. I'll pair that with a GTX 1070. However, I am still lost on which CPU I should get. Maybe just a 8600k? How does that sound? Sorry I am a bit of a noob haha.

At 1440p with a 1070, you're back at ~60 fps gaming for the most part (at least in modern games at high settings) so again you're in a situation where your choice of CPU probably won't have a major impact on FPS.

Ok, fine. Let's do it this way lol. What would YOU do in regards to CPU and GPU with a 1440p resolution at 144hz.

Out of that I would probably go with an 8700k which is what I originally had planned on. Should I go with a GTX 1080 then?

The 8700K matched to a GTX 1080 at 1440p and 144 Hz is great but with the price of 1080ti's now in reach, if you can swing the 1080ti then all the better but a 1080 will do the job. It's also well worth looking at the second hand market for a good 1080ti as I have seen them on Ebay going at really good prices...just a thought..

I do not have the money, nor the need, for a 4k.

I guess I'll go with a 1080ti.

Ok, after looking at cost more in depth, I've decided I need to stick to 1080p @ 144hz. I have never even had a pc over 1080p, so I will not even know what I'm missing, plus I will get higher fps. So, with that being said, I have the same question of which gpu and cpu would be best for 1080p @ 144hz? I am assuming a GTX 1070 or GTX 1070 Ti would be fine? Not sure about the cpu, as I am still confused on how it actually effects performance. So, I would just go off on a limb and say I should get an i5-8600k or a new i5-9600k?

Thanks for all the help!
