Opinions on my new AMD mobo/cpu

Hey everyone,

I just picked up a ASUS M5A99FX PRO R2.0 AM3+ on sale, and was planning on purchasing the AMD FX 6300. My primary use for this computer will be gaming. I'm playing Dirt Rally right now and my 5 year old PC just isn't cutting it. I also plan on picking up GTA and a few other games in the near future.

However, skimming through some threads here, I'm wondering if I should of went Intel? The board is on the way but I guess I could return it.

If AMD is good enough though, should I go with a better processor then the 6300? I'm not shy when it comes to moderate overclocking, and plan on doing that. I just liked that I could get the the mobo and cpu for well under $200.

I plan on using two 5850s in crossfire until budget allows for a new gpu.

(other info: 750W power supply, 8gb g.skill ddr3 1600)

Thanks!

Well I have pretty much the same system, it still runs most games very well but the AMD FX cpu's are really starting to show their age and it is very tough for me to recommend one in 2015, I think an intel i5 system is the better buy for today and the future. Check out these fallout 4 benchmarks intel really pulls ahead, its really making me consider spending the money to upgrade to an intel platform.

Well that's interesting... maybe I should go Intel. You're just another person who's suggested that..

So (without starting another thread) what intel mobo/cpu combo would go that would future proof me for some years to come? I'm hesitant to give a price limit, but is it possible to achieve this for under $300? A quick glance and I see the i5-4690K is $220ish... so not sure if that's possible or not.

Well you will save money if you go for a locked chip but that means no overcloking via the multiplier: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/vhTZFT

Here is one with the 4690k had to go to $310 unless you really skimp on the motherboard which I would not recommend if you plan to overclock and you would also want to spend maybe another $30 on a decent cpu cooler if you dont have one, I would not recommend overcloking on the stock intel cooler: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/4mBvqs

Well I got the ASUS M5A99FX PRO R2.0 AM3+ for $80...

If I chose a better (then 6300 cpu), but still keep my cost around $200... will there be that much of a difference between this and scrapping my plans and going with a whole new intel setup at $300-400? I'm assuming I'd have to purchase new RAM too. (Already have RAM for for my current plan).

Side note, I once stumbled upon a webpage that benchmarked two 5850s in crossfire against other cards... both single and crossfire. Now I can't find it. Do you know what site that could be?

Other AMD cpu's will likely perform the same in the majority of games as the 6300, clock speed is what makes a difference most games will not utilize the 6 threads in a 6300 never mind the 8 threads in an 8300. If you have DDR3 ram in your current system it should work no problem in an intel system. Its up to you, personally I would go intel, if I could spare the money.

Not sure I will do a google search and see if I can find it.

Dunlop thanks for taking the time for your responses.

Something I'm confused about. On paper the the 4690 and and 6300 look the similar. Each have 3.5Ghz, and 4 cores on the intel and 6 cores on the 6300. How is the intel so much better?

Well this is a very general explanation but, the AMD 6300 has 6 slow cores (there is only 3 true cores the other 3 are logical cores), the intel i5 has 4 true cpu cores that are much faster than amd's cores. Games generally prefer fast single cores, not a lot of slow cores. This is why even an i3 will beat out an amd fx8350 8 core in some games, because the game will only use a few cores so most of that 8350 is doing nothing, and the cores on the intel are faster therefore it performs better. In tasks like rendering then the gap between intel and AMD closes because when rendering a video the software will be able to use all of that 8 core amd cpu not just a piece of it.

Dunlop, thanks again. Looks like I'll be returning what I bought and picking up a 4690 and mobo. Not sure if you could answer this, but would a L1150 socket mobo have any issues running two 5850s in crossfire? As I said, that is my plan until I can afford a nicer, newer, better graphics card.

No problem. As long as the motherboard uses Z87 or Z97 chipsets it will support crossfire, thats what you want anyways if you plan to overclock your 4690k.
