Hi all,

I am a first time builder and wanted some feedback on my new rig plans; I already have the case and I have my heart set on a core i7 and gtx 970 but open to suggestions on specifics (RAM, cooling and PSU mainly) and any advice or comments on anything that I may not have considered would be greatly appreciated!

These are the parts I have so far decided upon: Link to PCPartPicker
CPU: intel core i7-4790K
MB: Asrock z97 extreme4
GPU: Gigabyte Geforce GTX 970 4gb Windforce
RAM: Kingston fury 16gb (2x8)
SSD: Samsung 850 evo 250gb
HDD: WD Green 2tb 5400rpm
Cool: Thermaltake water 3.0 ultimate
PSU: Cooler Master G750W 80+ Bronze
OS: Windows 7 Pro
Case: Thermaltake Core v71 (purchased)
I am also following a blue/black theme.

And just for good measure the stickied questions:

Approximate Purchase Date: ASAP (this week?)
Budget Range: AUD $2000 ideally, not fixed however.
System Usage from Most to Least Important: Multitasking, gaming, internet (tab fiend), CAD.
Are you buying a monitor: No
Do you need to buy OS: Yes
Preferred Website(s) for Parts: cplonline, centrecom, msy, scorptec (all have melbourne pickup)
Location: Melbourne, Vic, Australia
Parts Preferences: Case: Thermaltake v71 (bought already), core i7, gtx 970
Overclocking: Yes
SLI or Crossfire: Maybe (future)
Your Monitor Resolution: 1920x1200
Additional Comments: Blue/black theme, CAD software will be mainly Solidworks, Inventor and MATLAB (Engineering student!) not TOO fussed about noise (within reason)
And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading: last (2008) computer is dying.

Thankyou for your time!

RAM - I would recommend g.skill ripjaws-x 16gb 2133 cl9, they are black/blue.

Cooler - 280mm rad I recommend nzxt x61 kraken for 240mm rad I recommend cooler master nepton 240m.

PSU - recommend seasonic g750 semi modular very high quality, would urge this the most out of all three considering you want to overclock.

Also the green hdd are known to be troublesome for that price id recommend seagate baracuda 2tb 7200rpm and also you could save slightly on the ssd and get the 840 evo model difference is very small.

- Your system is very powerful, only to be 'limited' by a 1920x1200 resolution. System that costs about half of this one can also max out about any game at that resolution.
- CAD software works with generic videocards of course, but if you are into serious 3d modeling your only option is a firepro/quadro card, since the generic videocards lack the computing precision of these cards.
- I would change the psu for a better one, especially if planning on overclock you will need a high quality psu (Seasonic, XFX, FD, Silverstone).
- Get a 7200 rpm harddrive instead of a slow 5400 rpm.

Wow thank you for your quick responses!

r3v3ng3: Thank you, I'll look into all those suggestions they're much appreciated.

bootcher: Thank you also;
- I plan to upgrade the monitor next in the future, mainly after I recover from this initial cost outlay.
- I considered quadros but as my priorities are gaming then CAD, and from what I've read it seems gaming cards do better with cad than cad cards do with gaming (correct me if I'm wrong) so I chose to go the gaming route.
- I will definitely look into a different PSU and HDD.
