Hi,

I have purchased a system that I want to use for photo and video editing
(Adobe Photoshop/Lightroom/Topaz.../ DaVinci Resolce, Insta360 Studio...)

With the following list of components:
  • CPU: Intel Core i9-13900K
  • Motherboard: ASUS ROG Maximus Z790 Hero
  • RAM: Corsair Vengeance RGB 32 GB DDR5-7200 (2x16GB)
  • Storage:
    • SanDisk SSD PLUS 1000GB
    • Samsung SSD 860 EVO 1 TB
    • Intel SSDPEKKF512G8 512GB NVMe
    • Toshiba KXG60ZNV512G NVMe 512GB
    • Micron 2300 NVMe 512GB
  • Graphics Card: Gigabyte RTX 4070 Super Windforce OC
  • Case: Corsair 5000D Airflow
  • CPU Cooler: Corsair iCUE Link H150i RGB 360mm
  • Additional Case Fans: 7 x Corsair iCUE Link QX120 120mm Magnetic RGB
  • Power Supply: be quiet! Dark Power Pro 12 1200W Titanium
  • Operating System: Windows 11
How would you rate this system for the intended purpose? Is there worthwhile upgrade (e.g. RAM)?

Thanks in advance for your opinions & input,
Matt

Hey Matt,

That's a very solid build. It will do exactly as you need. I would probably go 64gb for the ram, and in a 2x32gb kit as opposed to 4x16gb. Some of the apps you've mentioned can make use of it.

You do have a lot of case fans going on. There really isn't any need for all of them, specially with the AIO on top (if that's where you are putting it). 3 additional would be fine, and even then you'll be trying to figure out where to put them :) It's a nice case.

Other than that, I'd be happy out with that rig, as it would be a stellar 1440p gamer as well as a highly capable work machine.

Good job!

Hi,

could somebody explain briefly, why it would be preferable to have 2x 32GB RAM instead of 4x16GB?

I am not even sure if there are 2x32GB bars with 7200 MT/s speed... At least I couldn't really find them online...

Thanks

Sure.

So, with 4 DIMM slots populated you 'may' get less clock speed from the 4 x kit and with 4 occupied slots, it also puts a bit of pressure on the SOC and the IMC (Internal memory controller). This sometimes requires a small bump on SOC/Mem voltage to stop any instability.

Also, if building a small form factor PC, the mobo's often only come with 2 slots.

There is also the aesthetic of the system for some. Having 4 slots filled, kinda looks cool. This would not be a consideration for me.

FIRST - Update the BIOS to the latest version. Many of Intel's 13th and 14th gen CPUs can run dangerous (to the life if the CPU) voltages due to a microcode bug. Are you getting this CPU new? I would not trust any used 13th or 14th gen Intel CPU.

Definitely too many fans - chaotic vortices instead of good air velocity is a detriment to overall cooling.

Look into 2x24GB sticks of RAM too. Some say that 24Gb chips are better (can overclock more with tighter timings and cause less of a strain on the IMC), but I have yet to see hard evidence. In any case, it's 50% more RAM for about the same cost.

just wondering why wouldn't you go with intel ultra 9 285k? i was under impression that intel has made that chipset for content creators, video editors and such.
