Optane + SSD (boot + storage) or SSD (boot NVMe) and SSD (boot)

what's a better design/mild gaming laptop setup?

Intel Optane 64GB NVMe + Samsung 860 Pro 1TB (boot + storage)
or
WD Black 3D 512GB (boot) + Samsung 860 1TB (storage)

(Already have 32GB HyperX ram and i7-7700k)

LinusTechTips tested this exactly - the benefit from Optane w/ an SSD is minimal, as SSD data pulls are already so fast that the increased speed of optane isn't really needed or noticeable. You're far better doing either 2 SSDs (small for boot, large for stuff), or SDD+HDD, or HDD + Optane, but pairing two fast forms of memory in a source/cache arrangement (like optane+ssd) is not efficient or useful.

Keep in mind that a major field of study with processors is efficient caching algorithms. It's probably rather rare the processor has to go to drive more than once for something with common accesses vs. keeping stuff in memory and whatnot, due to significant performance penalties as you go to slower media.
