Optical audio out?

Hi all, I just got a 5.1 surround sound system that I want to plug my pc into so that the audio outputs to the surround sound system

My MOBO is a MSI Z87-G45 gaming board with an optical (spdif) jack on the back. My surround sound receiver also has the same jack.

What I am thinking is that if I buy an optical cord and hook my pc to the surround sound receiver it should work like plugging my pc into my normal boom box with an aux cable right?

Any help will be genuinely appreciated

Once you select your Optical S/PDIF output as the default device, that's exactly how it works.

I have my HTPC hooked to my receiver that way for full 5.1 surround sound.

I used to have mine set up this way as well. Unfortunately, my cable is about 6" too short.
