Hey everyone. Thanks in advance.

I have recently purchased a high-tech 7.1 dolby dts ect.. stereo receiver and attempted to connect it via an optical cable from my 750i sli ftw motherboard. As i connect the optical cable into my motherboard soundcard it fits snugly and then as i traverse to my stereo it cable does not seem to fit snugy but i am not able to see any red light escaping. It doesn't feel fully connected to me but I've tried adjusting it, all but taping it or something..

I would guess that is the problem. Well i use realtek audio and i have it set so the digital output is default , i've attempted to test all the different types of audio 44.1k, dts, dolby, ect.. 16bit, 24bit...

It just is not working.

I have my receiver set up it has to DVD output, but i just imagine that the stereo should automatically know the input is giong to the DVD because i set the "input" for the stereo to optical..

Any suggestions?

I would say that the problem is from windows side, you have to select the proper output device from window audio settings. There should be an option to select the optical out as default device, possibly a checkbox labeled SPDIF.
The fact that the optical cable (toslink) wont doesn't fasten to the stereo is typical, mostly caused by crappy cable build. Usually the two notches that hold it in place are badly shaped and don't stay in place. Try strapping it to the power cable or any other cable near by with a velcro strap or something so that it doesn't move around.

If you aren't getting the red light, then the cable isn't connected OR windows isn't using the optical output. Check the windows control panel's sounds tab to check what the default output device is. [The Realtek control panel also might have an option; been ages since I used their SW...]

OP: red light is a go =) always has been. I felt it was an issue with the stereo receiver as the connect feels loose there. But when it comes to windows, there is always trouble lurking around a corner. I actually used to install car audio equipment and have been using windows for 15+ years quite intensely. So i know a few things about electronic audio.. Yet i can't seem to troubleshoot this. Any more ideas that I might have missed?

btw. 1/8inch outputs work fine, center, left right, ect.. hdmi does transfer fine to my monitors audio input but doesnt to the stereo receiver. I understand how to set default or disable devices, i've even tried using only the opitcal and disabling and unplugging all of the other audio outputs so windows defaults to opitcal..
I'm just lost.

Windows will only enable the jack when it has something to send. Unfortunately windows is also limited to 2 channels of uncompressed audio when sent via optical. Up to 8 channels are supported when an AC3 or DTS source obtains exclusive control of the port
